Mariner Training in Brazil: Inside the Institute of Nautical Sciences

For a long time there has been a deficit of trained maritime officers in Brazil, as for decades the only accredited training institutes were run by the Brazilian Navy, where a very limited number of prospective maritime deck and engine officers could be trained at its two training institutes in the country. That's all changing now with the Institute of Nautical Sciences (ICN) leading the way.With the discovery of the pre-salt in 2007 and the continued growth of the maritime and offshore sectors, the lack of qualified Brazilian officers became acute. For many years, and even today, most offshore captains and officers are foreigners, while there is a more significant number of local captains and officers in the merchant fleet.

Uniwise Buys NAUTIS Simulator for OSV Training

For training of Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV) activities within their fleet, Uniwise Offshore Thailand purchased a NAUTIS Offshore Supply Vessel Simulator and Instructor Station. The simulator was delivered and installed by VSTEP at the Uniwise Offshore training center in Songkhla. Uniwise Offshore owns and operates the largest crew boat fleet in the Gulf of Thailand, supporting the Kingdom’s offshore oil and gas activities. The Songkhla training center plays a key part in the company strategy to develop, train and retain competent Thai crew. The Songkhla base houses the main technical center of excellence, with an engine maintenance facility essential for high crew boat up-time, a large warehouse for critical spares and mentioned training center, through which all crews must pass.

Kongsberg to Supply Simulators for NigerianTraining Center

PEM Offshore Limited signed a multi-million dollar contract with Kongsberg Maritime for the supply of a full suite of Offshore Anchor Handling, Dynamic Positioning, Power Management and Crane Simulation systems. The new simulators will form the main infrastructure for a world-class offshore simulation training center and the first of its kind in Nigeria and West Africa. Mexico's Oceanografia S.A. de C.V. signs  multi-million dollar contract with Kongsberg Maritime Simulation’s Mystic, CT, USA office for supply of maritme simulators. The contract is for the supply of a suite of offshore anchor handling, Dynamic Positioning, engine room and crane simulation systems, underpinning the main infrastructure for a new world-class offshore simulation training centre to be situated at Mexico’s primary offshore supply hub for the Gulf of Mexico.

BOEMRE Director Remarks, World Nat’l Oil Companies Congress

BOEMRE Strengthens Offshore Inspections Program

Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) Director Michael R. Bromwich announced today that the bureau will begin to use multiple-person inspection teams for offshore oil and gas inspections. This internal process improvement will improve oversight and help ensure that offshore operations proceed safely and responsibly. BOEMRE New Positions to Further Regulatory Reform

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) formally announced its search for qualified leaders to fill two senior positions to further offshore oil and gas regulatory reform efforts. The first position is the Director of the Offshore Training Center, and the second is the Division Chief for the Oil Spill Response Division. Both positions are being advertised nationally to recruit the most qualified professionals to establish new organizations in the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), one of two new bureaus being created as part of the reorganization of the former Minerals Management Service. BSEE is the new bureau responsible for regulation and enforcement of offshore activities.
