Oslo-listed subsea services provider Reach Subsea said Wednesday it had won a decommissioning contract in the North Sea. The contract is with an undisclosed client, and represents around 40 project days for execution in Q1 2023. Reach Subsea will use the Olympic Delta vessel for the project. Financial details were not disclosed.Olympic Delta is a subsea vessel equipped for light IMR and survey work for both the oil and gas and renewables sectors.Reach Subsea has an existing cooperation with Olympic Subsea for Olympic Delta, and the parties have agreed to extend the cooperation for the whole of 2023. Currently, the extended cooperation comprises an additional 150 days of firm work for the two ROVs currently mobilized on the vessel.

The global heavy lift vessel market is a difficult place to be. Utilization for the fleet has remained depressingly low since the first oil and gas downturn in 2014, currently hovering around 33% for the global fleet with a lift capacity of over 800 tonnes, according to IHS Markit’s ConstructionVesselBase. Fixed platform installation work, the traditional market driver for the heavy-lift fleet in oil and gas, has seen demand fall significantly. According to global figures from IHS Markit’s FieldsBase, 190 fixed platforms were installed in both 2013 and 2014, rising to 219 in 2015.

Italian oil and gas contractor Saipem said it has reached a deal to purchase the pipelay, heavy lift and construction vessel Lewek Constellation for $275 million. The 2013-built DP3 rigid and flexible pipeline construction vessel had been previously owned by bankrupt EMAS Chiyoda Subsea. Saipem said the vessel will be available for hire immediately and will be marketed globally, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea and Norwegian Sea where the its characteristics are particularly suitable for submarine tie-backs. Saipem CEO, Stefano Cao, said, “In the current economic scenario, the subsea tie-backs developments are becoming increasingly important as they maximize the utilization of the existing infrastructures at reasonable expenditures.

Kvaerner and KBR, Inc. will establish a joint venture to competitively bid on offshore platform topsides contracts for the Johan Sverdrup field development offshore Norway, the companies announced. The alliance combines Kvaerner's expertise and resources as a turn-key contractor for offshore platforms with KBR's competence as an international offshore oil and gas contractor. "KBR sees Kvaerner as one of this industry's most experienced EPC contractor, particularly for demanding projects in Norway, including the Johan Sverdrup field," said Stuart Bradie, KBR President and Chief Executive Officer. The Johan Sverdrup field is one of Norway's largest offshore oil and gas fields, and it is expected that the first development phase will include four offshore platforms for a new field center.
