GEA Heat Exchangers said it will present its latest innovations at SMM 2014, the maritime-business trade fair for shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology from September 9-12 in Hamburg Germany. The company will exhibit in hall A3, at stand 212, where visitors can become acquainted with a variety of product innovations for maritime operations and offshore applications. In addition to its already proven exhaust gas recirculation coolers (EGR) for four-stroke diesel engines, GEA Heat Exchangers now presents a new model for two-stroke diesel engines in medium and high output ranges.

Waterjet manufacturer HamiltonJet recently got great news when four HT900 waterjets were selected for Incat Crowther’s latest project – a first-of-type 70 meter Catamaran Fast Crew Boat for operations in the Caspian Sea oil industry in Azerbaijan. When completed, this vessel will be the world’s largest high speed crew boat operating in the global oil industry. It will also be the largest vessel HamiltonJet has been involved in to date, and will further showcase waterjet’s performance and maneuvering benefits over other forms of propulsion in this demanding marine sector.

U.K.-based EJ Bowman has manufactured its range of marine heat exchangers and oil since 1919. The company recently had its range of hydraulic EC to PK shell and tube oil coolers design approved for marine use by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and now hold certificate no. 02-LD302798-PDA. Bowman heat exchangers and oil coolers are suitable for use on engines up to 1,400 kW (1,880 hp) and for gear boxes up to 1,800 kW (2,400 hp). As a result of this design approval EJ Bowman are exhibiting at the Workboat Show in New Orleans in December 2003. Guests at Universal Orlando theme parks benefit from complimentary, on-site transportation to and from its resort hotels and theme park attractions.

Over the past three years the Spanish engine manufacturer Guascor has been making inroads into the U.S. workboat engine market. They not only have a good product, but also were fortunate enough to sign an agreement with the Marine Division of Reagan Equipment Company, Plaquemine, La. Reagan also distributes engines for John Deere and Waukesha, so the addition of Guascor fits well into their overall engine lineup. Over the past couple of years Reagan has sold dozens of Guascor engines to repower push boats. "Our Guascor engine line which includes 575 hp, 750 HP and 1150 HP at 1800 RPM have been good engines for this application," said Warren Berthelot, general manager of Reagan Marine.

In recent months several diesel engine manufacturers have expanded their existing engine and generator ranges to include models suitable for workboat, large yacht and fishing vessel applications. This translates to more propulsion choices for boat builders and owners. Following is a look at four newly launched lines. Last September, MTU introduced the new 8000 series, moving the company into medium-speed engine market. The first engine of the line is the 20V 8000, which is capable of producing 9,000 kW at 1,150 rpm. The 20V is primarily intended to be used as main propulsion for large yachts and workboats, as well as for diesel-electric propulsion and onboard power supply systems in cruise ships.

P.O. Aquamarine Engineering supplies titanium heat exchangers, and has done so for the marine industry for more than a decade. The shell-and-tube design have performed as main engine fresh water coolers, hydraulic oil coolers, refrigeration condensers and brine coolers. "The resurgence in the push boat new-builds for the petro-chemical market has been a pleasant surprise for Cummins Mid-South," says Calvin Klotz Vice-President for Marine Sales. Mid-South currently has engines for a half dozen or more Cummins-powered push-boats on order. Three of these boats are building at Kody Marine for Higman Marine Services' associated firm Maryland Marine Inc. The first vessel, to be named Skipjack, was delivered at the end of May. Construction on the two sister-ships is to start by July 1. Each of these three boats will be powered by a pair of Cummins KTA38 M1 main engines rated for 1,000 hp each at 1,800 rpm. The engines turn into Twin Disc MG540 gears with 6.18:1 ratios. The 78 x 53-in. propellers are mounted on 16-ft. by 8-in. cold rolled shafts.
