Schottel EcoPeller Deployed For Norwegian Ferry Refit

German maritime propulsion specialist Schottel announced that its Schottel Rudder Eco-Peller (SRE) is set to be installed for the first time in a retrofit project.For the project, a pair of four-bladed SREs type SRE 340 L CP, with an input power of 750 kW each, will be featured in a double-ended ferry from the Norwegian ferry operator Torghatten Traf-ikkselskap.Significant for this project is the fact that no hull changes or major steel work will be necessary, al-lowing work to be carried out by a local shipyard…

SCHOTTEL Propels World’s Largest LFC

SCHOTTEL has been awarded orders in the Norwegian fishery segment. Sefine Shipyard in Turkey has won the contract to build the largest live fish carrier in the world. Ordered by the Norwegian company Frøy Rederi, the Møre Maritime-designed vessel will provide space for 7,500 cubic meters of water in fishing tanks.The 83.20-meter-long and 30.90-meter-wide LFC is powered by an advanced diesel-electric propulsion system. Oil Recovered from Sunken Ship Thorco Cloud

More than 440 tons of heavy fuel oil was extracted from the tanks of the sunken general cargo vessel Thorco Cloud. The wreck lies in two sections 1,730 meters apart and 70 meters down in the middle of the eastbound traffic lane of the Singapore Strait following a collision in December 2015. The heavy oil in the fuel tanks and in trapped compartments was seen as a major pollution hazard. Both the bow and stern sections contained fuel tanks that required emptying, so the Thorco Cloud’s owner, Marship GmbH, supported by the P&I insurance company Standard Club, contracted Jaya Salvage Indonesia early last year. Bumi Subsea provided remotely operated vehicles (ROV) and the dynamically positioned Surf Allamanda, owned by Bourbon Offshore.

SCHOTTEL’s LEACON Certified Leak-free

Following a technical update, the SCHOTTEL LEACON system has now been certified by classification society DNV-GL as a leak-free sealing system for the oil-to-sea interface. This optimized version has already been integrated in the ongoing production. This means that SCHOTTEL drives with LEACON can still be operated in U.S. waters without the need to use bio-oils in compliance with the current VGP from EPA. SCHOTTEL LEACON is a service-proven system and has been used in its principal function since November 2009.

NCA, Miko Renew Service Agreement

The Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) renewed its service agreement with Miko Marine for the emergency provision of magnetic and fabric patches for damaged vessels. Under the new 2013 agreement, Oslo-based Miko Marine undertakes to provide 24-hour technical support for the use of the company’s unique range of patches and for their provision whenever necessary. Salvage and Tanker Kits of Miko magnetic patches are now carried aboard all principal NCA vessels following the organization’s decision to extend their carriage to all five of its Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs).

That Sinking Feeling

What is the duty of a vessel owner when his vessel sinks and becomes a hazard? What is a facility’s duty when it comes to vessels at their docks? On top of the oil, wreckage, and loss of use, there are legal duties and penalties for parties associated with the vessel – under relevant federal and state statutes – after it sinks. It’s the call that most owners/operators do not like to get: their vessel is partially submerged at a dock or in some navigable waterway and poses a threat to navigation.

Norwegian Administration Equips ETV's with Magnatic Patches

The Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) has placed a significant order with Miko Marine AS of Oslo, for the supply of Salvage and Tanker kits of its unique magnetic patches. The kits will be carried aboard all five of the NCA Emergency Towing Vessels (ETV) which are stationed around the coast of Norway. The ETVs will have the patches available for making emergency repairs to vessels with damage or hull integrity problems as may have been caused by collision or grounding or by defective valves and seals.

IMO Approves Shipbuilding Standards

International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved improved shipbuilding standards aimed at passenger and cargoships. The new construction rules, designed to increase a vessel's chance of surviving an accident, were agreed at the IMO's committee on stability and load lines headed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa). The new standards will go into effect in November and will apply to ships with keel laying after January 2009. Among the new rules is one concerning lubricating-oil circulation tanks, which must be kept a minimum distance of 500 millimetres from the keel line of the vessel to prevent the oil escaping in the case of a grounding leading to engine failure. Guidelines for the crew will also advise on how to ensure a vessel survives in an accident.
