London P&I Club Addresses "Cappuccino Effect"

The London P&I Club has advised its members on precautions to adopt to detect the presence of cappuccino bunkers. In the latest issue of its StopLoss Bulletin, the club explains that the cappuccino effect is essentially the frothing or bubbling effect caused by compressed air blown through the delivery hose. The aerated bunkers when sounded will give the impression that the fuel is delivered as ordered. In fact, after some time, when the entrapped air in suspension settles out of the fuel oil, the oil level drops and a shortfall is discovered.

MacGregor Launches Steering Alert System

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has launched Soteria, a new alert system designed to complement its Hatlapa and Porsgrunn range of steering gear. Named after the Greek goddess of safety, the system has been designed to offer a series of benefits for both ship owners and shipyards. “The system’s alert display can be fully integrated on the vessel’s bridge, ensuring clear and easy access to a comprehensive range of alerts,” explained Henrik Schädel, Hatlapa Drives & Controls expert at MacGregor. “The system has been designed for simple, economical installation and requires only one programmable logic controller (PLC), a feature which benefits shipyards," Schädel notes.

Eni Makes Oil Discovery

Eni has made the first oil discovery in the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) block, located in the Tano Basin offshore Ghana, about 50 km off the coast of Ghana. The discovery is relevant as it may have the potential for commercial development and confirms the importance of the block also in terms of the presence of oil, as well as natural gas and condensates. Eni plans for the immediate drilling of other wells to delineate the size of the discovery and confirm the feasibility of commercial development. The discovery was made through the Sankofa East-1X well, which reached a total depth of 3,650 meters, in 825 meters of water, and encountered 28 meters with  gas and condensate and 76 meters of gross oil pay in Cretaceous sandstones.

Alfa-Laval Establishes Presence Onboard World's Largest Liner

Swedish engineering company Alfa-Laval, which is known for its heat transfer and fluid handling will ensure that Cunard's Queen Mary 2 will be self-sufficient of fresh water - minimizing oily waste for disposal, thus reducing the oil level in the bilge water so that it can be discharged into the ocean. Queen Mary 2, which is scheduled for delivery in 2003, will be built at Chantiers de l' Atlantique for Cunard Line. The vessel, which is being touted as the world's largest ocean liner, will be at a cost of approximately $700 million.
