Damen Signs EPC Contract with Swedish Coastguard

Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Kustbevakningen, the Swedish Coastguard (KBV), for modernization on the vessel KBV 181. The vessel was built as a patrol boat, but will after modification serve as a combination vessel, for both patrol and oil recovery. Arctic Research Explores the ‘Roomba’ Approach

The pace and quality of oil spill research in the United States typically ebbs and flows as a function of two, if not three important variables. First, after the 1989 Exxon Valdez grounding, there was a flurry of activity to ramp up oil spill research because it had been dormant for so long. The need was recognized, with plenty of money made available. Primarily, this research centered on conventional spill remediation techniques – for example, a tanker or barge spilling oil – and not much else. Predictably, when memory of the spill faded, so did interest in research and funding followed.

Maritime Broadband Radio: First Wireless Network at Sea

Norway has become the first nation to implement maritime broadband communication on ships and planes in public service, enabling exchange of information that can be crucial in limiting damage when accidents occur. Kongsberg Seatex and Radionor have teamed up to develop Maritime Broadband Radio (MBR), which the Norwegian companies say is, in contrast to previous systems, highly stable and has extensive reach. Among other capabilities, MBR also enables streaming of HD-video. MBR does not require an internet connection to connect units in the network…

Dual-fuel Escort Tug for Østensjø Rederi

The first of three new dual fuel RAstar 4000-DF class extreme escort tugs, the Dux, has been delivered to Østensjø Rederi AS by Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Gondán S.A. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., the 40.2 meter vessel is the first of a three boat order from Østensjø for severe weather operations at Statoil's Melkøya LNG Gas terminal at Hammerfest in the extreme north of Norway. Finnish Firms Present Oil Recovery Project Results

A recent seminar held March 7 and 8 in Porvoo, Finland, saw Finnish companies Arctia and Lamor Corporation present the results of the IMOR (Ice Management & Oil Recovery) project, which seeks to enhance oil recovery in ice conditions. The oil recovery seminar, arranged by icebreaking services provider Arctia in collaboration with oil spill response specialist Lamor, was opened by the company’s respective CEOs, Tero Vauraste and Fred Larsen. In his speech, Vauraste stated that oil recovery is a key part of Arctia’s range of services.

Triplex Deck Equipment for New BOA AHTS Vessels

Triplex secures a new Triplex MDH 42 order from BOA offshore, including supply of Shark Jaws, Vertical Guide Pins & Spooling Block. Triplex say that BOA is the third ship-owner in Norway to opt for the Triplex MDH multi-purpose deck handling equipment on its AHTS vessels. The contract is for 1+1 vessel of Wartsila VS 491 design, and the equipment is scheduled for delivery in January 2014. "We are delighted that BOA has chosen Triplex Deck Equipment for its new AHTS vessels”, says Offshore Sales Manager at Triplex AS, Even Kippernes.

On January 18th, 2013, Damen Shipyards Galaţi (Romenia) has launched the World Diamond, the first of a series of six fully equipped Platform Supply Vessels for Norwegian offshore company World Wide Supply. The PSV 3300 series is part of Damen´s newly designed range of platform suppliers. Like the other five ships, The World Diamond is built and completed in Galati in cooperation with Damen Shipyards Gorinchem (The Netherlands) which provides the design, engineering and main equipment.

Ampol Completes Oil Recovery Equipment Testing

Oil Stop Division of American Pollution Control Corp. (AMPOL) completed phase two of its contract with the US Coast Guard Research and Development Center for the testing of Submerged Oil Recovery Equipment. The contract was completed in November after successfully executing a variety of tests at the OHMSETT facility in Leonardo, New Jersey. The OHMSETT facility allows industry professionals to work with real oil in simulated environments. As a result of testing, adaptations were made to AMPOL’s Oil Stop Bottom Oil Recovery System (OSBORS).

Kleven Maritime Enters Deal with Meling Supply AS

Kleven Maritime has entered into contract with Meling Supply AS for the building of one multifunctional platform supply vessel, design VS 485, designed by Wärtsilä Ship Design Norway. The company Meling Supply AS is a wholly owned subsidiary of the shipowner O. H. Meling & Co. AS in Stavanger, Norway. The vessel will be outfitted at Myklebust Verft in Gursken, Norway, delivery date is February 28, 2011. This is the third contract for Kleven Maritime within a month of the same vessel design, VS 485.
