Warming Could Make Oil-rich Gulf 'Intolerable' by 2100 - Study

Global warming could make life in the oil-rich, desert kingdoms of the Gulf "intolerable," with summer temperatures exceeding 60 degrees Celsius (140 F) by 2100 if action is not taken to curb fossil fuel emissions, a study warned on Monday. Using climate models and other scientific data, researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Loyola Marymount University found five of the region's major cities, including Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, would exceed the limit of human habitability in summer months. "If greenhouse gas emissions continue on their current trajectory, then temperatures in that region will reach levels intolerable to humans," Elfatih A.B. Eltahir, an MIT engineering professor and the study's co-author, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Gulf of Guinea Nations to Boost Maritime Surveillance

The AP reported that ministers from across Africa's oil-rich Gulf of Guinea agreed at a U.S.-sponsored meeting Wednesday to establish surveillance systems to try to stamp out illegal activity in their largely unpoliced waters. Representatives from 11 agreed in a statement to start using tools such as radar and locator transponders on ships to monitor activity off their coasts. The statement was issued during a three-day meeting in Cotonou, Benin, sponsored by U.S. government agencies and military. The U.S. government has been pushing countries to increase security along the little-watched West African coast, an area of growing importance for U.S. oil interests amid volatility in the Middle East.

Nigeria: Navy Concludes Plans On Local Shipbuilding

The Nigerian Navy has announced that it was making plans to commence shipbuilding locally in the nearest future with a view to meeting with capacity demands of the nation's maritime industry. According to the Naval Dockyard boss, although the naval Dockyard was yet to build ship locally, there were future plans towards that effect with a view to boosting activities along the Mediterranean. Rear Admiral Jonah who spoke on sundry issues including the reasons for Nigeria presence at the oil rich gulf of Guinea, said the gulf is part of the country and therefore the Navy have a need, both socially, economically and political to protect the regions.

Big Oil, Kuwait Close To Serious Upstream Talks

Big oil firms reportedly may start serious talks soon with Kuwait on upstream oil deals as the oil-rich Gulf state inches closer to opening up the prized sector.
