The ceremonial launch of construction of the lead icebreaking support vessel for Gazprom Neft Novy Port was held today at Vyborg Shipyard, a corporate member of the United Shipbuilding Corporation. Guests were greeted by Kirill Voroshilov, First Deputy General Director of the Vyborg Shipyard, who noted, “The newbuild laid down at the shipyard is a multipurpose vessel and is capable of coping with a great number of tasks while operating in heavy ice conditions. This icebreaking vessel is unique and to date it has been unrivalled on a global scale. The icebreaking support vessel will be built in accordance with a design targetting maximum icebreaking capability and considerable maneuverability with comparatively shallow draught.

The offshore patrol vessel UVL10, currently being built for the Finnish Border Guard at STX Finland Oy’s Rauma shipyard, was named Turva at a festive naming and launching ceremony on Friday 2 August. Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen acted as godmother for the ship, wishing the vessel and its crew luck and success in their future maritime operations. In her speech as the ship’s godmother, Minister Räsänen stated that taking delivery of the ship is an important part of the preparation for the risks of increasing maritime transport and prevention of environmental damage…

Godmother of the vessel, Minister of Transport Merja Kyllönen, gave the ship the name “Meri”. The festive event held on the outfitting dock of the shipyard was witnessed by representatives of the client Gaiamare Ltd, the classification society Bureau Veritas and  STX Finland, as well as numerous other guests. The multipurpose vessel MS Meri, scheduled for delivery to the client in summer 2012, is 105.4 metres long and approximately 18.8 metres wide. This modern and environmentally friendly deck cargo vessel, designed for global operation, can be utilised for a wide variety of tasks. When delivered, she will be able to operate as a transport vessel for demanding project cargo such as offshore wind farm structures and for energy wood transport in the Baltic Sea area.

On March 1, 2012, STX Finland Oy Turku shipyard carried out the launch of the multipurpose deck cargo vessel built for Gaiamare Ltd. The vessel will be approximately 105.4 meters long and approx. 18.8 meters wide. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered in late spring 2012. The launching was carried out near the shipyard’s construction basin following traditions of the yard with representatives from Gaiamare Ltd, the classification society Bureau Veritas and STX Finland; invited guests and press also participated. The multipurpose deck cargo vessel is designed to operate globally and can be utilized for various tasks, including transport of demanding project cargo, such as offshore wind farm structure and for energy wood transport in the Baltic Sea area.

Make no mistake about it: the Arctic is open for business. The cumulative environmental footprint of oil exploration outfits, merchant shipping, mining, eco-tourism and the cruise ship trades is thus far minor, but the potential for an exponential increase in commerce – especially if the climate trends now affecting the region continue – is seemingly limitless. For the maritime industry, the down side to this is as big as the most promising business opportunity to come along in decades. The utility of a Northern Sea Route that follows the Siberian coastline, producing impressive time and fuel savings, a reduced emissions footprint, and elimination of canal transit fees for shippers moving goods between Europe and Asia has already been proven.

Middle East Navigation Aids Service (MENAS) introduced its new multipurpose light tender vessel Relume in a special naming ceremony at Damen Shipyards’ Royal Schelde facility in Vlissingen, The Netherlands. Gov. Christine Gregoire on May 6, 2005, signed bills that will establish an Oil Spill Monitoring and Oversight Council to provide independent oversight of the state's oil-spill program and a new Washington Academy of Sciences to advise state government on scientific questions. “We are taking positive action today to ensure that our waters are protected from pollution,” Gregoire said at a bill signing ceremony held in Tukwila. · Promote opportunities for the public to become involved in oil-spill response activities. The new academy of sciences will include highly qualified persons in a wide range of scientific disciplines who are willing to contribute their time and expertise for assessments of complex public policy questions.

The American Salvage Association (ASA) met last week with eight representatives from the Bureau of Salvage and Rescue, China Ministry of Transportation, as well as other related groups from China, to exchange information about how the ASA represents its professional salvage company members in the United States, and how China manages its salvage and transportation program. Leading the delegation was Mr. Wang Zhenliang, Deputy Executive Director of the Bureau of Salvage and Rescue, China Ministry of Transportation. Ms. Diana Zhang, the delegation’s program director, served as interpreter for the meeting. Captain Jim Wilkins, USN, U.S. Navy Supervisor of Salvage, addressed salvage recovery efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the Gulf Coast region.
