New Tugs Delivered to Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority

Two next-generation Damen ASD Tugs 2813 have been delivered to the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA).Commissioned during a ceremony on December 14, the newbuilds Capt. Edward A. A. Awuviri and Nestor Percy Galley—named after two former Director Generals—were built at Damen Shipyards’ dedicated tug building facility Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam.The vessels each deliver 83 tonnes bollard pull ahead and up to 77 tonnes astern, making them capable of maneuvering the range of large vessels that use the Ghanaian ports of Takoradi and Tema…

Caribbean Builds Oil Spill Response Capability

Developing and maintaining sound capability to respond effectively to marine pollution incidents involving oil, hazardous and noxious substances is a priority in the Caribbean, which is home to many vulnerable ecosystems.In response, the Curacao-based Regional Marine Pollution Emergency, Information and Training Center for the Caribbean (REMPEITC-Caribe) organized a trans-boundary oil spill response exercise in Suriname (27-28 August).The event brought together response managers from Suriname and their western neighbor Guyana to test their response plans and discuss international coordination in case of an oil spill.

Congress enacted the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) a mere 17 months after the disastrous oil spill following the grounding of the tanker Exxon Valdez in Prince William Sound. Among the many provisions in the voluminous bill was a detailed planning requirement. For the first time, tank vessels and facilities handling oil in bulk were required to develop extensive plans for responding to a worst case discharge of oil into waters of the United States. Ramp-Up of NTV Oil Spill Resoures in Alaskan Waters

The Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC) and Alaska Maritime Prevention and Response Network (Network) have formed a "Strategic Alliance" to support Non-Tank Vessels (NTVs) in meeting new Federal regulations and enhance oil spill response in Western Alaska and Prince William Sound. The announcement was made at the recent Alaska Regional Response Team meeting in Anchorage. As a part of this Alliance, the Network will join the Marine Preservation Association (MPA), the funding organization for MSRC.

OSRL Introduces Well Capping Equipment

Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL), the global oil spill response co-operative funded by more than 160 oil and energy companies, has announced the opening of a new Base in Saldanha Bay, South Africa, to support regional and global response operations. Latest DofD Navy Contracts

US Department of Defense has awarded the following Navy contracts for worldwide logistic services, and secondly for port operations at Joint Base Pearl Harbor, Hickam, Hawaii. CACI, Inc.-Federal, Chantilly, Va., is being awarded $14,210,271 for two modifications under a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract (N00033-08-D-6506) with firm-fixed-price task orders for worldwide logistics services supporting Military Sealift Command’s Logistics directorate. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., (75 percent); Chantilly, Va., (10 percent); San Diego, Calif., (5 percent); Guam, (5 percent) and other overseas locations (5 percent), and is expected to be completed by October 2014.

BP Orders 4 PSVs from HHI for North Sea

The vessels will be deployed to support its West of Shetland (WoS) and Norwegian operations and are be delivered between the winter of 2013 and summer of 2014. The purpose built and highly specified vessels have been designed to provide long term support to BP’s North Sea business and will provide the capabilities BP requires to deliver its strategy more efficiently and safely. The vessels will have oil spill response capability and special tanks to transport fluids required for planned enhanced oil recovery (EOR) schemes. The arrangement is structured such that BP Shipping has contracted Hyundai to build the vessels and then hire them to BP Exploration Operating Company on a 15 year bareboat term charter.

The Technology EnviroMax Deepwater OSV

Technology Associates, Inc (TAI) a New Orleans based Naval Architecture firm which also has an office in India has unveiled its Technology EnviroMax 300 OSV. Utilizing a unique Designer/Builder relationship, this design was developed in conjunction with Thoma‐Sea Shipyards. The design already has up to six vessels under construction at Thoma‐Sea Shipyards’ facilities in Lockport, Laa. Thoma‐ Sea Shipyards acquired this facility from Halter Marine in 2002 and has been using it to build OSV’s up to 270ft.
