Chinese refinery crude oil throughput has reached its highest level ever, with total processed volumes up 12% in the first five months of this year compared to 2020, and up 10.9% from the same period in 2019. In total 292.7m tonnes have been processed so far this year according to the National Bureau of Statistics China.Despite the 12.0% growth in crude oil processing, Chinese crude oil supply, which includes imports and domestic production, has only grown by 2.3% in the first five months of this year.

Freight rates eased further on Friday, especially for the largest oil tankers, promising some recovery for West African oil prices which had touched multi-year lows. VLCC freight costs eased more rapidly than smaller Suezmaxes, making it less advantageous to ship on the latter. In the first quarter of 2017, 2.0% more goods passed through the Port of Rotterdam than in the same period last year. The growth in the container sector (8.8% by volume (TEU), 10.8% by weight) is particularly striking, says a press release from the company. Of the 11 different commodities, only mineral oil products and other liquid bulk showed a decrease. The total throughput volume increased to 119.3 million tonnes. The Houston Ship Channel re-opened to some vessel traffic on Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard said, after an early morning tanker fire prompted closure of the waterway. The U.S. Coast Guard Houston Vessel Traffic Service said it would commence with tow vessel transit outbound from Old River and San Jacinto River. That would be followed by inbound movements, it said. The Houston Ship Channel links the busiest U.S. petrochemical port to the Gulf of Mexico. The Port of Rotterdam reported a 5.4 percent increase in the amount of goods handled by the port for the first nine months of 2015, boosted largely by higher volumes of crude oil and oil product cargos. "The growth is almost entirely due to the increase in the handling of crude oil and oil products,” explained Allard Castelein, CEO Port of Rotterdam Authority. “Most other types of goods were handled in similar quantities as last year. Total throughput at the Port of Rotterdam grew by almost 7% in the first half of 2015 thanks to a surge in oil products movements. The port attributed their growth by the increased throughput of oil products, which increased by almost 30% as well as the 8.3% increase in crude oil throughput. "The growth was almost entirely accounted for by the throughput of oil products (+29.7%), crude oil (+8.3%), containers (+3.7% in TEU) and roll-on/roll-off-transport (+9.6%). The throughput of dry bulk (agricultural bulk, coal, ores) fell across the board. For the first time since 2010, the number of sea-going vessels increased considerably (+3%)," says a press statement.

Container throughput at the Port of Marseilles totaled 826,000 teu to the end of October - a 3.7 rise on the first ten months last year - marked by a 6.8% increase to 586,000 teu on east-west volumes through Fos. Box tonnage of 8.37 million tons (+6.9%) helped general cargo to a 5.1% improvement on 14.48MT, which also included a 6% rise in RoRo traffic to 3.65MT. Liquid bulks maintained the upward trend, finishing the period 6.6% better on 2.83MT, but total port traffic slipped 3.5% to 80.24MT due to continuing lower demand in the high volume oil and dry bulk sectors. Warm weather saw oil throughput 2% worse at 51.93MT despite a three-point rally in crude imports to 37MT. Against 4% growth in LNG to 3.41MT, refined products and LPG were down 15% on 11.5MT.

At 303.9 million tons, cargo throughput in the port of Rotterdam in 1999 fell by 3.5 percent. This decrease is less than the 3.7 percent in the first half-year, but is a downturn compared with the top year of 1998 when 314.8 million tons were handled. The volumes of container cargo, grain and animal feed, scrap metal, and other liquid bulk cargo increased considerably this year. However, this did not compensate for the decrease in imports of ore, or the throughput of crude oil and coal.
