PowerX Unveils 'First-ever' Battery Tanker
Japan-based company PowerX has unveiled the detailed design of the first-ever āBattery Tankerā at an exhibition in Imabari City, Japan. The inaugural ship āXā aims for completion by 2025, with domestic and international field testing planned to start in 2026. This electric propulsion vessel will be 140 meters long and will be equipped with 96 containerized marine batteries, providing a total capacity of 241MWh. "The onboard battery system is based on our proprietary module design, featuring safe and reliable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells that ensure a lifespan over 6,000 cycles.
Japan's JFE to Invest $363,3M in New Offshore Wind Monopile Plants
Japan's JFE Engineering Corporation is set to build a factory for the construction of monopile foundations and transition pieces for the offshore wind industry. The company also has plans to build jacket-type foundations in the future."The monopile foundation consists of a transition piece for connecting the monopile as a support and the wind turbine tower and is an extremely thick, large-diameter, long super-heavy object, which is difficult to manufacture at existing factories in Japan.
MAN Diesel Ship Engine Production Steady
Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding co., Ltd. (MES; President: Takao Tanaka) achieved production volume of 181 MAN B&W low-speed diesel engines manufactured at the Tamano Works Machinery Factory (Tamano, Okayama Prefecture) in fiscal 2015, representing for 3.28 million horsepower (results in the previous fiscal year were 181 engines and 3.54 million horsepower). Since MES formed a technical tie-up with the Denmark-based B&W (now known as MAN Diesel & Turbo) on diesel engines in 1926, it has built a production track record as one of the worldās leading manufacturers, with cumulative horsepower production of over 90 million horsepower.
MES Produced 3.83 Million BHP in 2012
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Said they produced 3.83 million horsepower (BHP) by 187 sets of Mitsui-MAN B&W Diesel Engine at its Tamano Woks, (Okayama Prefecture) for fiscal year 2012, while the production in the previous year was 4.31 million horsepower (BHP) by 220 sets. MES, since it first entered into technical agreement with B&W, Denmark (currently MAN Diesel & Turbo) for diesel engine manufacturing in 1926, has ever produced total accumulated engine output of 80,000,000 BHP as of November 2012 as a leading manufacturer of diesel engine. Mitsubishi: Innovation on Using LNG as Fuel
Tokyo - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) has developed Japan's first system for supplying high-pressure gas which will enable use of natural gas as fuel for marine engines. The company agreed with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (MES) for delivery of the first unit. The use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel achievable with the new system will enable reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, compared with use of heavy oil fuel, thus contributing to reduced environmental burdens. Going forward, MHI will focus on marketing activities to attract orders for high-value-added ships equipped with the new system. Mitsui-MAN B&W Diesel Engine Achieves World Record
This world record is established when MES completes the construction of Mitsui-MAN B&W 6S50MC-C Mark 7 at its Tamano Works (Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture) for Sanoyasu Hishino Meisho Corporation (with president Mr. Shinich Kimura), who will install such engine to a chip carrier of 4.35 million cubic feet (shipyard No. 1260) to her owner, Mitsui OSK Lines. In the wake of growing demand for new shipbuilding boosted by active ocean cargo transport, the production of diesel engine by MES is significantly increasing recently. Only after two years and five months since MES achieved 50 million horse power production in October 2005, it establishes accumulated 60 million horse power record since it produced the first engine in 1928.
Norwegian Carrier Goes Adrift
Reports indicate that a Norwegian-registered car carrier anchored off Minami-Izucho, Shizuoka Prefecture, on Saturday after it lost power and went adrift in a gale, according to the Shimoda Coast Guard Office. None of its 30 crew members were injured. According to the coast guard, the 39,710-ton car carrier Anna experienced engine trouble off Irozaki cape in the town. By Saturday morning, it had drifted about 2.4 kilometers off Mitsuishimisaki cape in the town, where it anchored. A tugboat from the coast guard reached the ship at about 8 a.m. Saturday. After waiting for three other tugboats to arrive, it was to be towed toward Omaezaki in the prefecture early Sunday morning. The vessel was carrying 517 kiloliters of fuel oil, but was not leaking, according to the coast guard.
