Remotely Operated Locks: Progress, But Still Under Study

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is evaluating remote operation of locks within the U.S. inland waterways system. Timetables are hazy, but the Corps plans to include remote operations capabilities during rehabilitations or new construction, in the work planned, for example, in the Upper Ohio Navigation Project, part of the USACE’s Pittsburgh District.In fact, the first install project is being readied at Lock & Dam 4 on the Monongahela River. L&D 4 is also known as Charleroi Locks and Dam because it’s at Charleroi, Pa, at river mile 41.5, between Pittsburgh and Fairmont, W.Va.

'Autonomous Guard Vessel' Concept Unveiled

A new offshore guard vessel concept aims to be smaller, lighter and more efficient than most of the vessels used to protect offshore operations currently. Eaton Wins Panama Canal Contract

Power management company Eaton has been awarded an additional $5.2-million contract to provide critical installation services for the Panama Canal Expansion Program. Eaton’s contract was awarded by Grupo Unidos por el Canal, SA (GUPC), the contractor responsible for the design and construction of the third set of locks of the expansion program under contract to the Panama Canal Authority. The expansion project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015 and operational in early 2016. Eaton has a decades-long history as a provider of power distribution products and solutions to the Panama Canal, including support for electrical system design and construction in 2011.

The Falcon (standalone), and Falconet (integrated) Data to Web system provides a low-cost and flexible solution to transmit, store, host and present data from all common sensors to a dedicated website in real time. The new system can communicate using GPRS, GSM, radio or satellite, can be coupled to almost any sensor, and can be retrofitted to existing platforms. Data is presented on a dedicated website with a password access, using secure servers, and can interface with existing data gatherer and SCADA systems. Multiple sites can be displayed on one screen, with inputs from multiple sensors.
