A first-of-its-kind project to convert a 1950s tugboat to run on ammonia-to-power technology is moving forward, with several key milestones recently achieved, involved technology partners report. The Amogy-led retrofit project involves a comprehensive overhaul of the tugboat's original diesel generators and electric motors, integrating the Brooklyn startup's 1-megawatt ammonia-to-power system.Once installed, Amogy’s onboard solution will feed liquid ammonia through its cracking modules integrated into a hybrid fuel cell system that will provide zero-carbon power to the vessel’s electric motors.

Data Management for Comprehensive Fuel Management & Compliance

FUELTRAX optimizes uptime and reduce costs with a real-time marine fuel management solution. Solving your emissions and fuel monitoring reporting and compliance headache is what they are all about. In today’s operating environment, it would be an understatement to say that detailed insight into fuel consumption and efficiency is one key to managing marine operations. But, beyond the operational headache of determining where and why you are consuming so much fuel and so quickly, regulatory compliance is also emerging as a fundamental requirement of modern marine operators. The two cannot be separated any longer. And, that’s where FUELTRAX…

Hatenboer-Water Wins Order for Saga Newbuilds

(Image: Saga Cruises)

Netherlands based Hatenboer-Water said it will supply water treatment equipment for two new cruise vessels currently under construction for Saga Cruises at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. The equipment, which conditions fresh water derived from bunkering in the harbor or seawater desalination, is an onboard solution for safe drinking water. Once stored, fresh water is post-treated in two stages: hardening by neutralizing filters and disinfection with a chlorine product. Bunkered fresh water is disinfected at the intake. If required, pH is adjusted.

Emerson, Rederi AB Develop Flowmeters for Fuel Efficiency

Following a joint program by Rederi AB Transatlantic, Transas AB, and Emerson Process Management to develop an onboard solution for better control of marine fuel consumption, Rederi AB Transatlantic has installed Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis mass flowmeters on several ships in its fleet. The standard solution uses a compact Micro Motion F100-Series Coriolis sensor with a Model 1700 transmitter to provide highly accurate, traceable and transparent mass-based measurement of fuel oil. Using the MODBUS communications protocol, the mass flowmeter sends data to a fuel efficiency control system supplied by Transas AB in Sweden. This system, also called a Conning unit, collects information from the flowmeter and other onboard systems to help the crew optimize the operation of the ship.
