COSCO Shipping Launches Smart Sailing Platform

COSCO Shipping Ship Services has launched a Smart Sailing platform which includes a CII digital toolbox, an intelligent anti-collision solution, and a crew behavior recognition solution.The Smart Sailing platform aims to improve ship service levels and capabilities. Initial focus has been on low-carbon operations, navigation safety and smart supply chains. GD's 'Rescue 21' SAR System Accepted in USCG Sector San Juan

U.S. The Rescue 21 system increases the speed and accuracy of maritime search and rescue operations while improving Coast Guard effectiveness in responding to security and maritime environmental threats. The U.S. Coast Guard has formally accepted the General Dynamics C4 Systems-built Rescue 21 search and rescue communications system now serving Sector San Juan. With the command center located in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, Sector San Juan is responsible for all Coast Guard missions throughout the Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands region. Using advanced direction-finding technologies and digital communications, the life-saving Rescue 21 system enables Coast Guard personnel to respond rapidly and efficiently to calls from distressed mariners out to at least 20 nautical miles from shore.

Cummings: Fix Delays in TWIC Enrollment

Yesterday, during a hearing convened to review the progress of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, called upon Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Coast Guard to address the issues impeding a seamless introduction of the program. The TWIC card was designed to prevent access to secure areas of maritime transportation facilities by individuals who pose a threat to our nation’s security.

Coast Guard Sector Baltimore Change of Command

Capt. Brian D. Kelley will assume command of Coast Guard Sector Baltimore on Friday at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore. Capt. Kelley will relieve Capt. Curtis A. Springer, who assumed command of Sector Baltimore in June 2003. Capt. Springer will now be Assistant Chief of the Office of Personnel Management in Arlington, Va. As commander of Sector Baltimore, Capt. Kelley will also be Captain of the Port, Officer in Charge of Marine Inspection, Federal On-Scene Coordinator, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, and Federal Maritime Security Coordinator for all Coast Guard operational missions in the Sector’s area of responsibility. That area covers the Upper Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, including the Potomac River and the National Capital Region.

EuroFerrys Takes First Auto Express 101

The first of Austal's Auto Express 101 ferries is scheduled to debut this month for Spanish operator, Euroferrys, across the Strait of Gibraltar. The 331 ft. (101 m) Euroferrys Pacifica is the largest of Austal's flagship Auto Express car ferries ever built, and is also reported to be the largest high speed catamaran in the world with diesel propulsion. With the capacity for 951 passengers and 251 cars, the new aluminum ferry will operate on the 16 nm route between Algeciras on the southern coast of Spain and Ceuta in Spanish Morocco, completing six return crossings per day. Euroferrys currently operates a 256 ft. (78 m) fast ferry and two conventional ferries on two separate routes.
