Classification society DNV has introduced the shipping industry’s first competence standard for vessel remote control center operators (RCCO). The standard is supported by a new recommended practice that offers a certification scheme for RCCOs. Together, they provide a framework for training, assessing, and certifying personnel working in remote-control centers that support or manage operations at sea. No question that the market for new floating production systems has taken a battering. The past 12 to 18 months have been a difficult period for everyone in the business sector. Absence of new contracts has forced fabricators and equipment suppliers to make huge cutbacks in personnel and spending. MarineTraffic, the world’s most trusted AIS vessel tracking service has started supplying geographical positioning data to the Equasis project, a European Commission initiative started in 2000 to make ship safety information more widely available. The Equasis project makes information including a vessel’s age, ownership, management, flag, classification society, P&I club and recent geographical positions available via an online database that is freely accessible worldwide to registered users. It helps promote the exchange of unbiased information and transparency in maritime transport, closely aligning it to MarineTraffic’s own company values and aims.

Regs4ships announced the launch of its 18th flag to Digital Maritime Regulations (DMR) product. From February 18, 2014 Regs4ships will be able to offer an Australian regulations product that contains all relevant flag state documentation along with digital copies of SOLAS, MARPOL and STCW, ILO Conventions and EU legislation. This new product will enable customers to have access to Australian Maritime Acts, Legislative Instruments, Marine Orders, Marine Notices, Forms, Guidance Notices and Fact Sheets (for more information please refer to the product specification). Tough new air pollution regulations for the maritime industry are making it difficult for the shipping industry to comply. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), to name a fe.w, have introduced new regulations to regulate air pollution. Steep fines and delays face maritime operators that do not comply with engine emissions monitoring and reporting. This is a challenge for shipping companies on several levels. First, despite being similar in some respects, the regulations often have different requirements, operating parameters and deadlines. Second, until recently the continuous, onboard emissions testing equipment and services required to monitor emissions have not existed.

Testing delivers data needed to clean up tugs and workboats. Nessco appointment keeps a weather eye on MetOcean opportunities.
