US Offshore Wind Segment Showing No Signs of Slowing Down

© Fokke / Adobe Stock

The U.S. offshore wind segment shows no signs of slowing on its journey to deploy 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind by 2030 and 110 GW by 2050. Based on current project activity we anticipate around 60 GW of offshore wind capacity to be installed by 2035.By 2035, we will see offshore wind turbines operating in the Atlantic and the Pacific and probably the Gulf of Mexico. We will also see an emergence of commercial scale floating wind farms around the end of the decade. Floating

On Wednesday, French oil & gas major TotalEnergies and U.S. utility Duke Energy were declared provisional winners of the two lease areas auctioned by BOEM, the federal agency in charge of offshore wind area leasing and project permitting. Whilst the results can be seen as a positive indicator of the health of U.S. offshore wind market in the context of pre-2022 auction activity, the winning bidders secured development rights at considerably lower rates than those seen in the recent New York Bight auctions. The comparatively shallow water sites cover 110

DNV Publishes Standards for Remote Control Vessel Operators

(Photo: DNV)

Classification society DNV has introduced the shipping industry’s first competence standard for vessel remote control center operators (RCCO). The standard is supported by a new recommended practice that offers a certification scheme for RCCOs. Together, they provide a framework for training, assessing, and certifying personnel working in remote-control centers that support or manage operations at sea. Intelligent software systems and enhanced ship-to-shore-connectivity have laid the groundwork for the growth of remote solutions and autonomy in shipping.

Onboard Testing Services Emerge

As increasingly strict government and international maritime regulations are phased in to reduce harmful emissions produced by workboats and tugs, the need for onboard, in-use testing services capable of delivering accurate, continuous emissions data needed has also come about. Monitoring emissions such as NOx, SO2 and particulate matter is fast becoming not just the right thing to do; it will soon become a requirement, as well. Although much work has been done to clean up ports and marine terminals

Automated Systems Simplify Regulatory Compliance

Tough new air pollution regulations for the maritime industry are making it difficult for the shipping industry to comply. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), to name a fe.w, have introduced new regulations to regulate air pollution. Steep fines and delays face maritime operators that do not comply with engine emissions monitoring and reporting. This is a challenge for shipping companies on several levels. First, despite being similar in some respects, the regulations often have different requirements, operating parameters and deadlines. Second, until recently the continuous, onboard emissions testing equipment and services required to monitor emissions have not existed.
