IMRF Launches #SAFERSAR Initiative

The International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) has launched its #SaferSAR initiative which will look to enable global search and rescue (SAR) organisations to better collect, analyse and share maritime SAR incident response data.The aim is to enhance future maritime SAR response operations.The initiative, which is being funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, will encompass a 12-month feasibility study for a globally accessible platform that SAR personnel and organisations can use to share lessons and best practices identified in SAR response…

Helix Robotics Solutions Extends Sheila Bordelon Vessel Charter

Helix Robotics Solutions, the U.S. robotics division of Helix Energy Solutions Group, has extended the charter for Bordelon Marine's DP2 Jones Act-compliant Ultra-Light Intervention Vessel (ULIV) M/V Shelia Bordelon through June 2024.Helix currently primarily operates the vessel to support offshore renewables and inspection, repair, and maintenance (IRM) activities for clients operating in U.S. waters. Recently, Helix contracted the Shelia Bordelon to support the growing wind farm industry offshore the U.S.

Survey Seeks to Gauge COVID-19's Impact on Mariner Mental Health

The U.S. Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS) COVID-19 Working Group (C-19 WG) is encouraging mariners from all segments of the U.S. maritime industry to anonymously complete the “Mariner Mental Health Needs during Covid-19” online survey here.The confidential survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and asks mariners about COVID-19, mental health, and their experiences and feelings when on board vessels during the challenges of this pandemic. UN Spotlights International Day of the Seafarer 2018

Seafarers are the unsung heroes of shipping, the industry on which everyone, everywhere relies for the goods and commodities we all need and want. But it’s a tough and demanding job which sometimes can put pressure on mental health. This is why, this year, in 2018, International Maritime Organization (IMO) is joining the growing momentum within shipping to address the important issue of seafarers’ wellbeing. A seafarer’s job can be rewarding and fulfilling, but it can also have its more difficult moments. Many different factors can affect the quality of life at sea. They include shore leave, the threat of abandonment, prompt payment of wages, the prospect of criminalisation and even simple things like internet access and provision of exercise facilities on board ship.

Tilbury mulls setting up New Port Terminal

The Port of Tilbury, London’s major port, begins its pre-planning community consultation on 6 March to seek local views on its proposals to build a new port terminal adjacent to the current port. The proposed new port terminal, known as Tilbury2, will be built on a 152 acre site which was part of the former Tilbury Power Station and will include a new pontoon and deep water jetty. The Port of Tilbury has been expanding at a fast rate over the past two decade as businesses in the port look for more space and land; coupled with a significant increase in the goods and products coming through the port. The port estimates that this will increase further in the next 15 years which the proposed new port terminal would support.

Parker Kittiwake Launches Condition Monitoring Starter Kit

Parker Kittiwake today launched the Condition Monitoring Starter Kit. The kit combines the Parker Kittiwake DigiCell combined kit, the Holroyd MHC-Bearing Checker, and a PC tablet with a condition monitoring routine and log book pre-loaded on it to help guide the user in using the products for maximum effect. Created with the aim of introducing the power of condition monitoring to those owners and operators less familiar with it, the Condition Monitoring Starter Kit combines essential tools that protect vulnerable equipment and prevent failure. It utilises modern condition monitoring technology to simplify everyday maintenance observations and provide advance warning of possible maintenance requirements.

Liam Means Business for Shipping Cluster

Enterprising student Liam Finch has been putting his summer days to good use by working on an important survey for the Isle of Man Shipping Association (IOMSA). Liam, 20, is involved in a project aiming to shed light on the value of the marine industry to the island. He has based himself at the premises of Bibby Ship Management Group Ltd on the Isle of Man Business Park. Bibby commercial director Mark Robertshaw is also vice chairman of the IOMSA and welcomed Liam onboard to undertake the work. Liam, from Derbyhaven, is studying Viking Studies at the University of Nottingham. The scheme itself takes place during the summer over a period of six to 12 weeks depending on the size of the project and needs of the business / organisation.

Helm Report Says Workboat, OSV Safety Compromised

Some 50% of crews working on offshore support vessels are willing to compromise safety rather than say ‘no’ to clients or senior management, while nearly 80% believe commercial pressures could influence the safety of their working practices. The chilling findings, released to coincide with this week’s International Maritime Organization Maritime Safety Committee meeting, come from a new report on workboat and OSV safety commissioned by operations and maintenance management software specialist Helm Operations. ‘The Impact of Crew Engagement and Organizational Culture on Maritime Safety in the Workboats and OSV Sectors’ is the first maritime safety study specific to workboats and OSVs and will be finalized in time for World Maritime Day 2015, on September 26.

IMO’s MEPC Set to Adopt Polar Code Provisions

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) meets for its 68th session from May 11-15, 2015, at IMO Headquarters in London. Items on the agenda include the proposed adoption of the environmental part of the Polar Code and associated draft MARPOL amendments to make the Code mandatory; the implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention; further work on air pollution and energy efficiency measures; and a proposal to extend the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) to parts of the Coral Sea.

Moore Director Declines Permanent Position at Port of L.A.

Interim Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gary Lee Moore announced today that he will not apply for the permanent position. After an executive director is selected and in place, Moore will return to his duties as Los Angeles City Engineer. “I’m grateful for Gary’s leadership, particularly for putting the TraPac container terminal expansion project back on track,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “It’s been a privilege to lead the Harbor Department since November,” Moore said.

Osiris Projects, part of Bibby Marine Survey Services, announce the start of construction by French shipbuilder Socarenam in Boulogne, of a sister ship to 'Bibby Tethra', to be named 'Bibby Athena'. A few subtle changes to the design for the new vessel reflect the company’s development into shallow geotechnical sampling and a more challenging offshore market. Launched in 2011, Bibby Tethra has proven the overall success of the small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) design in maximising stability and seakeeping ability in challenging sea conditions, while consistently achieving quality data.

Intermanager Supports Seafarers' Survey

InterManager, the international trade association for the shipmanagement and crewmanagement industry, is supporting a survey which aims to identify how much of a burden red tape places on seafarers. The Association is urging its members to encourage their staff to take part in the online survey, being organised by the Danish Maritime Authority. The worldwide study aims to identify seafarers' perception of administrative burdens and how these influence their daily working lives.

Decommissioning Body Elects New Directors

Decom North Sea (DNS), the offshore oil & gas decommissioning forum, held its annual general meeting last night in St Andrews, with 10 new directors elected from across all sectors of the decommissioning industry. The meeting heard that the supply chain body now has 213 fee paying members. Attendees were also given an overview of Decom North Sea activity over the past year and an update on progress against the various strategic objectives. Brian Nixon, Decom North Sea’s chief executive, said: “We are delighted to have elected a board of experienced directors to Decom North Sea. These industry professionals bring experience and knowledge from various sectors of the industry, which is vitally important for DNS going forward.
