As attention increasingly turns to ocean health and sustainability, an innovative new fish farm solution was deployed earlier this year when the De Maas’ Semi-submersible Spar Fish Farm (SSFF) became the world’s first offshore farm installed at an open ocean location exposed to tropical storms. MTR recently visited – virtually – with co-founder Philip Schreven for insight on the design and operation particulars of their innovation. How did you became involved in this unique niche of the maritime industry?Mark van Leeuwen and I founded De Maas in 2007 as an offshore oil and gas services company.

KHI Wins AiP from DNV GL for LFPP

The international accredited registrar and classification society DNV GL has awarded the Japanese multinational corporation Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) an Approval in Principle (AIP) for their LNG floating power plant (LFPP).The classification body said in a press release that the LFPP is a decentralized energy generation solution that enables locations to tap into natural gas as part of their power mix.The LFPP concept is designed for installation in areas where energy demand is rapidly increasing, but onshore infrastructure is not feasible or commercially viable. Instead, the LNG would be offloaded from a carrier, stored onboard in two cylindrical (IMO type C) tanks, and then regasified for power generation and exported to the onshore grid.

Zero carbon at sea? Rotterdam port eyes a greener future

© Jelle van der Wolf / Adobe Stock

In Rotterdam, ships from around the world cruise in and out of Europe's busiest port, a bustling industrial hub that employs almost 200,000 people and produces 20 percent of the Netherlands' climate-changing gases. As Rotterdam tries to cut its emissions - in line with global goals to curb global warming - shipping emissions are a particular challenge, not least because many fall outside the targets set by the Paris Agreement to curb climate change. But the city's bustling port

Bad Weather Stalls Bangladesh FSRU Hook Up

Excelerate CFO Nick Bedford and representatives from IFC, the Bangladeshi government, Petrobangla, and project lenders at the signing ceremony in Dhaka in the summer of 2017. IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and Excelerate Energy Bangladesh Limited (Excelerate) are co-developing the Moheshkhali Floating LNG project – Bangladesh’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal. (Image: Excelerate)

A vessel that arrived in Bangladesh in April to offload its maiden cargo of liquefied natural gas and moor permanently as an import terminal should begin operations "within a week" after bad weather hampered its start-up, an official said on Thursday. The floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) will allow Bangladesh to import LNG for the first time as its domestic gas production falls and will boost several power projects in a nation where 30 percent go without electricity.Since its arrival at Moheshkhali

Flex LNG Steers Away From Floating Units as Challenges Emerge

Image Source: Gazprom’s Kaliningrad FSRU (MARSHAL VASILEVSKIY) (Flex LNG)

Flex LNG, a liquefied natural gas shipping company and part of the nautical empire of Norwegian billionaire John Fredriksen, has dropped its interest in operating floating regasification units due to project failures and low returns. Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs) have been lauded by analysts as transformative for the LNG industry by opening up emerging markets to supplies as the vessels are cheaper to build than the onshore infrastructure normally needed to receive the super-cooled gas that is transported by ship.

Global FLNG Capex to Total USD 37.6bln

Global Capex on FLNG facilities is set to grow at a 9% CAGR over the 2018-2023 period, with expenditure forecast to total $37.6bn, said Douglas-Westwood report. Given the strong fundamental drivers – increasing gas consumption due to economic growth, fuel switching, and energy security – the outlook for the import vessels will remain strong over the 2018-2023 period. Despite near-term concerns due to challenging market conditions, the incentive to use FLNG units to develop gas reserves in remote places remains compelling. North America will account for the largest share of the market at 29%, with expenditure amounting to $11.1bn over the forecast.

DNV GL Okays New Floating Power Generation Concept

DNV GL has given IHI Corporation Approval in Principle (AiP) for its FLPS (Floating LNG Power Station) concept. The formal handover of the Approval in Principle took place in Tokyo on July 5. The design has been found to comply with DNV GL class standards and other relevant industry standards. The FLPS concept is a combination of a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) and a power plant. It is expected to be installed in locations where alternative onshore infrastructure is not feasible or commercially viable, while energy demand is rapidly increasing. The FLPS solution is also in line with the worldwide trend for decentralized power generation. It provides the opportunity for the receiving location to take advantage of the availability of natural gas as part of their power mix.

Prelude Floating LNG Facility

Shell signed two contracts with the Technip and Samsung Heavy Industries consortium for the Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) project off the coast of Western Australia. These contracts formalize the announcement made by Shell in October 2009 that Prelude is in the engineering and design phase of development. The first contract covers the front-end engineering design (FEED) elements specific to the Prelude project, taking into account the composition of the gas, local weather conditions and other site specific factors. The second contract details the terms under which the floating LNG facility would be built, if the final investment decision for the Prelude project is made. Planning for Prelude is progressing well.
