OOCL Hong Kong’s Maiden Call to Hong Kong

OOCL Hong Kong, the third largest cargo container ship in the world, docked in the port of Hong Kong for the first time on Thursday.The Hong Kong-based container shipping and logistics service company Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) said in a press note that the vessel was warmly welcomed at Kwai Tsing Container Terminal V by many friends, colleagues, and the community who went to marvel at one of the world’s largest containerships with a carrying capacity of 21,413 TEU.The vessel’s debut to the city of Hong Kong, an entrepôt well known for its long and vibrant history in international trade and commerce, has a very special meaning for OOCL.

COSCO Places Large Lubricants Order with Shell

Shell Marine said it has been awarded China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company’s (COSCO SHIPPING) largest marine lubricants order in 2017. This order will include the full range of marine lubricants and technical services for seven out of COSCO SHIPPING’S 10 new generation Ultra Large Container Carriers (ULCCs) with capacities of approximately 20,000 TEUs each, ordered in 2015 and due to be in service from 2018-2019. Shell Marine has supplied marine lubricants and services to over 140 COSCO SHIPPING vessels since 2004.

OOCL Scandinavia Unveiled

In Orient Overseas (International) Ltd (OOCL)’s series of six ‘G Class’ containerships on order at the Samsung Heavy Industry (SHI) shipyard, we are pleased to introduce the newest and fifth 21,413 TEU containership, named the OOCL Scandinavia, into our fleet of world trade ambassadors. The OOCL Scandinavia will be joining her sister vessels on our LL1 service, linking major markets in China and Northern Europe together. In commemoration of this milestone at OOCL, we are very honored that Mr. Yue Yi, Vice Chairman, Executive Director and Chief Executive of the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Ltd, was able to join us as our Guest of Honor and witness the christening of the vessel.

The explosive growth of international boxships is challenging not only the physical infrastructure of North American ports, but also the very nature of the existing supply chains that they impact. The recent dialogue on container shipping has been all about so-called “mega-ships;” those vessels that with larger capacity than those that are already in service at any point in time. In the container trades, as in tanker and drybulk arenas, ocean-going vessels are one link, albeit an important component, within broader supply chains.

Containership Receives a Special Welcome

The world’s largest containership received a special greeting when it arrived for the first time at Germany’s sole deepwater port. On October 16, EUROGATE welcomed the 21,413 TEU OOCL Germany at its container terminal in Wilhelmshaven, where employees had arranged containers on the stowage area to write out the ship’s record-setting TEU capacity. “Although we are in the meantime witnessing the world’s largest container vessels at Wilhelmshaven on a weekly basis, each occasion is still something very special,” said Mikkel Andersen, Managing Director of EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven.

CMA CGM to Build World's Largest Boxships at Chinese Yard

French shipping group CMA CGM plans to build nine of the world's largest container ships at two Chinese shipyards, the China Daily newspaper reported on Wednesday. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co confirmed that it and its sister yard Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co, had received a letter of intent from CMA CGM for the ships, which would be capable of carrying 22,000 20-foot equivalent unit containers (TEU), the newspaper said. The final order was subject to board approval from both sides, the newspaper said. Both yards are owned by state-run China State Shipbuilding Corporation. CMA CGM did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Calls to Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding outside office hours were not immediately answered.

Shell's Integrated Lubrication Solutions for World's Largest Box Ship

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has appointed Shell Marine to provide its integrated marine solutions, which include lubricants and services for OOCL Hong Kong. OOCL Hong Kong, currently plying routes between Asia and Europe, is the latest vessel to claim the title of ‘world’s largest containership’, with a capacity of 21,413 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), measuring 400m in length and 59m in width. The ship is equipped with MAN Diesel & Turbo’s (MDT) G-type engines that represent the latest in two-stroke engine technology.

OOCL Hong Kong Christened

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) announced the naming of its latest containership, the OOCL Hong Kong, at a christening ceremony held at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard on Geoje Island on May 12. The OOCL Hong Kong was also celebrated as one of the largest containerships in the world by carrying capacity, and will be a welcome addition to strengthening the OOCL fleet this year. In his ceremonial remarks, C. C. Tung, Chairman of Orient Overseas (International) Limited addressed the importance of this occasion for the company. “This is a very exciting time for all of us because today marks the first time that OOCL is receiving newbuildings in the 21 thousand TEU size.

Diana Charters OOCL Box Ship

Diana Containerships Inc., through a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, has entered into a time charter contract with Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL), Hong Kong, for its 5,576 TEU Post-Panamax container vessel m/v Great built in 2004.   The gross charter rate is $7,300 per day, minus a 3.75 percent commission paid to third parties, for a period of minimum nine months to maximum 12 months. The charter is expected to commence on April 8, 2017.   According to Diana, the employment is anticipated to generate approximately $1.97 million of gross revenue for the minimum scheduled period of the time charter.

15 Carriers Agree to EU's GRI Modifications

15 container liner shipping companies have said they will stop publishing and communicating general rate increases (GRIs) that are expressed solely as an amount or percentage of the change, says the European Commission. Shipper representatives have welcomed an agreement by  the container lines to abandon GRIs in favour of a new pricing announcement mechanism following a two-year inquiry by the EU into possible competition infringements – alleged “price signalling” – by lines. The announcement grows out of an EC decision to open formal antitrust proceedings that investigate the practice of publishing GRI announcements and whether carriers engaged in concerted practices in breach of EU antitrust rules in November 2013.

Box Ships to Acquire Two OOCL Vessels

Box Ships Inc. Enters Into Agreement To Acquire Two Vessels From OOCL And Related Financing Transaction; public offering of preferred shares and warrants commenced. Box Ships Inc. (NYSE: TEU) (the "Company"), a global shipping company specializing in the seaborne transportation of containers, announced that it has entered into agreements with subsidiaries of Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) to acquire two 5,344 TEU post-Panamax container vessels, the 1995-build OOCL Hong Kong and the 1996-build OOCL China. The purchase price per vessel is US$31.155 million, inclusive of fees and the expected dates of delivery for both vessels to the Company are to take place no later than July 14, 2012.

Grand Alliance Pacific North West Trade

Grand Alliance members Hapag-Lloyd, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) announced on Feb. 18 that they will cooperate with ZIM in two strings in the trans-Pacific trade, with immediate effect. The scope includes North China and Japan, South China, South East Asia to Canada and US North West Coast (NWX and PNX services). The services will operate on a weekly basis with a round voyage time of 42 days (PNX) and 35 days (NWX) respectively. ZIM will provide 3 x 8,000+ TEU vessels from July onward and the Grand Alliance will provide 8 x 8,000 TEU vessels. Grand Alliance Re-routes EU3 Service

Grand Alliance members Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Berhad, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) will re-route all eastbound EU3 service vessels around the Cape of Good Hope, instead of transiting the Suez Canal. Presently there are no changes planned for the westbound trade. The decision, which takes place with immediate effect, is in response to high Suez Canal toll fees, which are difficult for carriers to afford in the current economic environment. Port rotation of EU3 remains the same: Southampton / Hamburg / Rotterdam / Port Kelang / Singapore / Shekou / Hong Kong / Ningbo / Shanghai, with an extra seven days added to the schedule due to the diversion. 10 ships of 8,000+ TEUs are operating on the service.

Grand Alliance, Zim Cooperate on Route

Grand Alliance members Hapag-Lloyd, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) and Zim Integrated Shipping Services have agreed to cooperate on service from South China to US East Coast via the Panama Canal. The joint operation is expected to take effect in April, subject to filing with the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC). New port rotation of the South China East Coast Express (SCE) service is Kaohsiung – Shekou – Hong Kong – Kingston – New York – Norfolk – Savannah – Kaohsiung on a 56 day round trip. The new service will consist of eight vessels of 4,200 TEU. Grand Alliance will provide five vessels and Zim will provide three vessels. The Grand Alliance, formed in 1998, is an integrated consortium in global container shipping.

Grand Alliance Contract Extended

The Grand Alliance, founded in 1998, is the leading integrated consortium in container liner shipping. Its members are Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Berhad, Malaysia, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Japan, and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Hong Kong. The four member lines have today extended their cooperation for a further term of ten years. The member lines of the Grand Alliance are continuing their successful cooperation, and today Adolf Adrion, Executive Board member of Hapag-Lloyd AG, Niels Kim Balling, Vice-President of Liner Business, MISC Berhad, Minoru Sato, Representative Director and Executive Vice-President of NYK, and Philip Chow, Chief Executive Officer of OOCL, have signed an agreement extending their cooperation up to 2017.

Hapag-Lloyd Names New Mega Containership

The Hanover Express, which is capable of carrying 8,750 containers, is one of the world’s largest containerships. The newbuilding was recently named in Hamburg. The patron was Gabriele Frenzel, wife of TUI’s CEO and chairman of the supervisory board of Hapag-Lloyd, Dr. Michael Frenzel. Naming ceremonies for large containerships are still something special even in Hamburg, and nearly 300 guests from business and politics – including the Mayor of Hamburg Ole von Beust and the Mayor of Hanover Bernd Strauch – attended the event at Container Terminal Altenwerder, at the quays of which the Hanover Express had berthed. Hapag-Lloyd’s latest newbuilding was named by Gabriele Frenzel. The new ship sailing under German flag can carry 8,750 standard containers.
