Improving Propulsion Efficiency: Wärtsilä to Retrofit Ten Hafnia Tankers

Finland-based marine technology group Wärtsilä will supply its EnergoFlow and EnergoProFin solutions for ten Bird Class oil and chemical tankers owned by the Singapore-based global tanker operator Hafnia."The combination of the two Wärtsilä systems ensures an optimized waterflow over and after the propeller, thereby improving propulsion efficiency considerably. Wärtsilä to Equip LNG-fueled RoLo Newbuilds

Wärtsilä announced on Friday that it will supply the main equipment for three liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled short-sea Ro-Lo (roll-on, lift-off) vessels to be operated by Finland based Bore Ltd., an affiliate of the Dutch Spliethoff Group.The ships have been ordered and are being built at the WuHu Shipyard in China. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in December.Wärtsilä said it has worked in close collaboration with both the owner and the naval architect to develop a vessel optimized integrated LNG system.

Wijnne Barends Orders LNG-fueled Newbuilds

Wartsila Wins Deal for Four LNG Tankers

Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract covering four newbuild tanker vessels. The ships are to be built at the Avic Dingheng shipyard in China, on behalf of three Swedish owners; Furetank (two vessels), Älvtank, and Thun Tankers, a fully owned subsidiary of Thunbolagen. The vessels will be commercially managed by Furetank Chartering in the Gothia Tanker Alliance. The contracts were signed in the second quarter of 2016. The ships will fulfil the IMO's Tier III requirements and will be fuelled primarily by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The scope of Wärtsilä's supply to this project is extensive. Wärtsilä Propellers to Drive Greek Tankers

TMS Tankers Ltd, one of the largest Greece based shipping fleet operators, has selected Wärtsilä fixed pitch propellers (FPPs) for its new vessels under construction in China. The order was placed with Wärtsilä's joint venture company in China, Wärtsilä CME Zhenjiang Propeller Co Ltd (WCME), in December 2015. Other leading Greek shipping companies have also recently opted for Wärtsilä FPPs. The contract covers the propellers for four Aframax tankers under construction at the Hantong Ship Heavy Industry yard. The Wärtsilä FPPs will be fitted with the company's EnergoProFin solution, a propeller cap with fins that rotates together with the propeller to produce fuel savings of up to 5 percent.

'Singing' Propellers Phenomenon Controlled

A joint research project carried out by Wärtsilä and City University London has succeeded in identifying the specific design parameters that create the risk of 'singing' propellers. Though rare, 'singing' is nevertheless an annoying problem that occurs as a strong tonal noise originating from the propeller, thus causing a negative effect to onboard comfort levels. The research programme reached its conclusions in December 2015. The problem has long been recognised in the marine industry. While the general perception has been that the frequency of the propeller blades' vibration mode coincides with the frequency of the hydrodynamic excitation forces at the trailing edge of the blades, the current research indicates that there is more complexity and sensitiveness to this hypothesis.

Signet Transports Second LLOG Rig to GofM

On September 14, five Signet Maritime ASD/Z-Drive tugboats, the SIGNET ENTERPRISE, SIGNET RELIANCE, SIGNET MAGIC, SIGNET WEATHERLY, and SIGNET VOLUNTEER successfully completed the Towout of LLOG’s DELTA HOUSE semisubmersible production facility to the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. In June 2011, Signet also assisted with LLOG’s highly successful OPTI-EX Floating Production System (FPS) for the Who Dat development field located in Mississippi Canyon 503/504/547. Signet Maritime’s Tractor fleet escorts DELTA HOUSE to the Gulf of Mexico. Signet’s International Operations Complex located in Ingleside, Texas was responsible for assisting with the arrival of each hull on a heavy lift vessel (HLV), offload in the deep hole, lifts & sets, stability (incline) testing, and sail-out.

Wärtsilä introduced the FPP Opti Design, a new fixed pitch propeller (FPP) design concept. According to Wärtsilä, the new design offers fuel savings of up to 4 percent and highly reliable full scale performance predictions. The Wärtsilä FPP Opti Design was developed at the company’s Technology and Service Center in the Netherlands. CFD calculations analyze not only the propeller performance but most importantly also, the interaction between the propeller and hull. This provides accurate information to achieve design and parametric optimization.

According to Wärtsilä, the new design offers fuel savings of up to 4 percent and highly reliable full scale performance predictions. The concept has been developed utilizing the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The Wärtsilä FPP Opti Design has been developed at the company’s Technology and Service Centre in the Netherlands, and is the result of highly experienced design engineers having access to the very latest and most sophisticated software and analysis tools. CFD calculations analyze not only the propeller performance but most importantly also, the interaction between the propeller and hull.

InterMoor Wins Contract with LLOG in Gulf of Mexico

InterMoor, an Acteon company, has won a contract for design, fabrication and installation of 12 suction pile anchors, preset installation of 12 chain/polyester/chain mooring lines and hook-up of the LLOG Delta House production semi-submersible (the Floating Production System “FPS”). The work will be conducted in the Mississippi Canyon 254 block of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The project will involve suction pile design, fabrication and installation, followed by preset mooring installation and pre-set mooring hook-up of the FPS. The 12 piles will be 85 ft. long and 16 ft.

SCR Detailed Design Contract for 2H Offshore

2H Offshore Inc., an Acteon company, awarded a Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) detailed design project with LLOG Exploration Company. The scope of work includes the provision of detailed design of the production and export SCRs tied back to the Exmar OPTI-11000 semi-submersible for the Delta House field development. LLOG is currently developing the Marmalard and SOB2 fields in the Mississippi Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico which will both be tied back to the Delta House Floating Production Facility located in MC Block 254 in approximately 4,500 feet of water.

Exmar to Accelerate Payment with LLOG

EXMAR said that following the terms of the Asset Purchase Agreement, LLOG and EXMAR have reached an agreement in principle whereby LLOG will accelerate the payments due on the sale of the OPTI-EX. EXMAR will receive a lump sum consideration for the sale of the OPTI-EX of $250m in January 2012 in addition to the payments of $104.5m already received in July 2011 and $10.4m received during the second semester 2011. This will result in net cash proceeds after tax  of approximately $127m. Net profit on the sale of the OPTI-EX will be approximately $50m and accounted for fully in 2011. This transaction will further reduce the financial debt position of EXMAR by approximately $113m.
