A Hong Kong registered tanker assisted in the rescue of two men adrift in a sailboat off the U.S. East Coast.On Sunday, watchstanders at the U.S. Coast Guard Fifth District command center were notified of an overdue sailing vessel, Atrevida II, which was sailing from Cape May, N.J. to Marathon, Fla. The two men aboard, 65-year-old Kevin Hyde and 76-year-old Joe Ditomasso, were last in contact with family and friends on December 3, when they departed Oregon Inlet, N.C. The Coast Guard began urgent marine information broadcasts and direct communication with commercial vessels in the area in an attempt to locate the Atrevida II. A search effort was launched, involving multiple Coast Guard aircraft and cutters, vessels from the U.S.

A tugboat is semi-submerged after alliding with the Old Bonner Bridge in Oregon Inlet in North Carolina on Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.All eight people aboard the tug Miss Bonnie reached shore safely without injury. No pollution has been reported.The Coast Guard responded to the incident on Sunday afternoon after it received report of the allision from a good Samaritan at approximately 11:09 a.m..The semi-submerged tug is currently leaning up against the bridge.The cause of the incident is under investigation.

The U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA and Environmental Protection Agency are monitoring the tracking and assessment of more than six dozen stray cargo containers lost due to high winds and heavy seas about 17 miles off Oregon Inlet, N.C. On Sunday, March 4, the cargo ship Maersk Shanghai alerted watchstanders at Sector North Carolina’s command center that they lost about 70 cargo containers during a heavy roll. Maersk later confirmed the total number of containers lost overboard was 76 as well as their contents. A. P.

As many as 73 stray cargo containers pose threat to mariners off North Carolina.   The Coast Guard is warning mariners of navigation hazards after about 70 cargo containers fell off of a cargo ship Saturday night, about 17 miles off Oregon Inlet, North Carolina.   The cargo ship Maersk Shanghai contacted watchstanders at Sector North Carolina’s command center via VHF-FM marine radio channel 16, notifying them that they lost approximately 70 to 73 cargo containers due to high winds and heavy seas.   The Coast Guard urges all mariners to transit this area with caution.

Strong winds and heavy rainfall were expected across the southeastern United States on Tuesday even as the center of Tropical Storm Colin was moving into the Atlantic Ocean. The storm was 90 miles (145 km) southwest of Charleston, South Carolina, at 4 a.m. eastern time (0800 GMT) and moving at 31 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. A tropical storm warning was in effect from the Altamaha Sound Georgia to Oregon Inlet in North Carolina on Tuesday morning. On its forecast path, Colin was to barrel along the coast of the southeastern United States before moving out to sea during the day. As 50 mph winds were expected in the region, a tornado was reported in Lee County Florida, the National Weather Service said.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (“Great Lakes”) (NASDAQ:GLDD), the largest provider of dredging services in the United States and a major provider of environmental and infrastructure services, announced today the signing of two subcontracts valued at approximately $55 million for work in the Middle East as well as the receipt of a $38 million award for a coastal protection project in North Carolina. The first subcontract in the Middle East is for a land development project and involves dredging over 7 million cubic meters of material by creating several water circulation channels and pumping the resulting material up to 7,000 meters to its designated reclamation area.

The Coast Guard rescued two missing kayakers Sunday in Pamlico Sound, south of Oregon Inlet. Both male kayakers were found alive, conscious and wearing life jackets at about 1:20 a.m., approximately nine miles southwest of the area they initially reported their distress. A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Station Oregon Inlet located both men, brought them aboard and took them to Station Oregon Inlet where they were both placed in the care of awaiting local EMS. Both men were in the water for more than nine hours. “The fact both men were wearing life jackets greatly enhanced their chances of survival tonight,” said Lt.j.g. command duty officer for the case.

Coast Guard Oregon Inlet crew members and Dare County EMTs came to the aid of an injured woman Tuesday after the boat she was on ran aground southeast of Wanchese. Personnel at Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet received a report Tuesday afternoon stating the 32-foot sport fishing vessel Not Fancy had run aground in Wanchese Harbor, injuring a 62-year-old woman aboard. A 24-foot Special Purpose Craft - Shallow Water crew from Station Oregon Inlet responded. The crew launched from the station and picked up two Dare County EMTs at Broad Creek Marina. Once on scene, the Coast Guard assisted the EMTs in administering first aid and transferring the woman to the Coast Guard small boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) informed it has lifted restrictions and enforcement of the regulated navigation area Thursday at Oregon Inlet between Bodie and Pea Islands. The captain of the port for Sector North Carolina lifted vessel draft restrictions and enforcement of the regulated navigation area at the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge in Oregon Inlet as outlined in 33 Code of Federal Regulations 165.520. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently dredged an unmarked channel in the shoaled area of the navigation channel in the vicinity of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge. Mariners are encouraged to obtain the most recent USACE Wilmington District hydrographic survey information, centerline waypoints and controlling depth.

Members from the U.S. Coast Guard and National Park Service rescued a loggerhead sea turtle Sunday in Oregon Inlet. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina in Wilmington received word from a good Samaritan boater the turtle was tangled in a line and dragging a plastic bucket in the vicinity of Bonner Bridge. A 24-foot Special Purpose Craft crew from Station Oregon Inlet, along with a National Park Service agent with a degree in zoology, were sent to free the turtle and assess its condition. The crew arrived on scene, took the turtle aboard and freed it from the line. The NPS agent took measurements, collected data and determined the turtle to be in good health with minimal injuries. The loggerhead was then released.

The Coast Guard cutter 'Block Island' has completed a 150 miles tow over a 32-hour period of the disabled 54-foot yacht 'Zulu' with 3 persons on board during bad weather off the coast of North Carolina. The captain aboard the Zulu initially contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watch-standers via satellite phone to report that the sailboat was disabled and adrift with three people aboard approximately 100 miles east of Oregon Inlet, N.C. The Coast Guard, with the assistance of the Navy, saved four lives and responded to a total of five sailboats in distress off the Atlantic Coast Thursday and Friday. Coast Guard assets and personnel involved in Thursday and Friday's search, rescue and vessel assists were crews aboard two HC-130 Hercules airplanes and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Block Island, a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Atlantic Beach, N.C., a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet, N.C., and the command center personnel of the 5th Coast Guard District and Sector North Carolina.

The Coast Guard responded Monday to an allision between a 58-foot charter boat with nine people aboard and the Bonner Bridge in Oregon Inlet, N.C. A concerned boater aboard the vessel West Wind witnessed the allision and contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders via VHF-FM marine radio channel 16 at approximately 5:45 a.m., stating that the charter boat, Sandra D, struck one of the support pilings of the bridge, resulting in a five-foot by 10-foot hole in the boat's bow and possible injuries to three of the passengers aboard.

The Coast Guard Atlantic Area, Navy Second Fleet and the FBI are participating in Exercise Frontier Sentinel June 12-14 approximately 90 nautical miles east of Oregon Inlet, N.C. In particular, the exercise will gauge the effectiveness of inter-service cooperation at the tactical and operational levels. These functions are crucial to the successful implementation of "layered security," a strategy called for in the United States' National Strategy for Maritime Security. In order to test the effectiveness of doctrine and to increase the familiarity with one another and their respective roles, these partners must practice together in as-close-to-realistic scenarios as possible.
