Indian Master Receives 2016 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea

The Master of an oil tanker who says she was “just doing her job” has received the highest International Maritime Organization (IMO)  bravery recognition for saving the lives of seven fishermen from a sinking fishing boat during a tumultuous storm in the Bay of Bengal in June 2015. “It is every seafarer’s and Master’s solemn duty and obligation to save souls in distress at sea. I just did what a seafarer should do for a fellow soul in distress at sea. Yes, it was an instant decision, but not without assessing the risks involved. I just did my duty,” said Captain Radhika Menon, Master of the oil products tanker Sampurna Swarajya. Award for First Female Indian Captain for Exceptional Bravery at Sea

Captain Radhika Menon, Master of the oil products tanker Sampurna Swarajya, is to receive the 2016 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for her role in the dramatic rescue of seven fishermen from a sinking fishing boat in tumultuous seas. The IMO Council, meeting for its 116th session in London, endorsed the decision of a Panel of Judges that Captain Menon displayed great determination and courage in leading the difficult rescue operation in the Bay of Bengal in June last year. Captain Menon was nominated by the Government of India, for the rescue of all seven fishermen from the fishing boat Durgamma, which was adrift following engine failure and loss of anchor in severe weather. Food and water had been washed away and they were surviving on ice from the cold storage.

Cargo Growth at Indian Ports Remain Sluggish

In FY14, total cargo handled at Indian ports increased by 4.3% to 976 million tonnes from 935 million tonnes during FY13. The growth was pegged down by sluggish cargo performance at the major ports which registered a meagre 1.8% growth in cargo volumes to 556 million tonnes in FY14. Non major ports on the other hand exceeded the overall growth rate by recording an 8.3% growth in throughput on a yoy basis to 420 million tonnes. While the growth was meagre, on a positive note the major ports arrested the decline in cargo volumes to register the first increase in yoy cargo throughput since FY11. During the first four months of FY15, the cargo throughput at major ports has registered a modest 3.3% growth over the corresponding period of previous year. According to Mr.

East Coast India Ports Climb in the Ring: Analysis

Adani Ports has acquired an interest in Dhamra Port, situated between the major ports of Haldia and Paradip. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone recently announced the much-anticipated acquisition of Dhamra Port Company Limited (DPCL), a joint and equal ownership by Larsen and Toubro and Tata Steel. DPCL is a concessionaire at Dhamra Port (in the state of Odisha on the east coast of India) and has been entrusted with the responsibility of building and operating a multi-user, multi-cargo port. DPCL holds a 34-year concession which can be renewed for two additional 10-year periods. Adani Port reportedly had been awaiting environmental clearances (received early this year) for Phase 2 expansion at the port and has also been serving as management consultants to the port.

India Now World's Top Ship-breaking Centre

India emerges as the world's largest centre of ship-breaking with 415 ships demolished in the ship-breaking yards of Alang in 2011-12. Another 150 giant behemoths, used to ferry millions of tons of goods across the globe but no longer seaworthy, are waiting there to be broken down, informs 'Asian Age'. Pakistan has emerged as the number two ship-breaking country followed by Bangladesh and China, but in the latter country ships are broken in dry docks and not along the coast. Gopal Krishna, heading Toxics Watch Alliance, said, “The number of ships allowed to enter the country are steadily rising because of the lax regulatory climate prevailing here.

Orissa Govt to Examine Shipbuilding Proposal

Orissa, which plans to set up at least a dozen of ports along its 450 km long coastline, has received a proposal for shipbuilding and repair yards. Sources said Bharati Shipyard Ltd. and Apeejay Surendra Group, had jointly proposed to develop a state-of-the-art shipbuilding and ship repair yards at Dhamara in Bhadrak district. Official sources said the government was serious about the proposal because this could result in as many as 41,000 new jobs. [Source: The Economic Times]
