Partnerships of Deep-Sea Methane Scavengers Revealed

The sea floor off the coast of , , is home to a diverse assemblage of microbes that scavenge methane from cold deep-sea vents. Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have developed a technique to directly capture these cells, lending insight into the diverse symbiotic partnerships that evolved among different species in an extreme environment. The community's interconnected metabolism sheds light on how the anaerobic microbes, which consume nearly 80 percent of the methane leaked from marine sediments, limit oceanic emissions of this potent greenhouse gas. Metagenomic analysis, in which the genetic material of all microorganisms swept from their homes in a sample is sequenced wholesale, yields a plenitude of general information.

Column: MarAd's CCF: Orphan Child Or Financing Solution?

First Orphan Basin Oil Exploration for mid-August

In mid-August, Chevron Canada will drill the first exploratory well in the Orphan Basin. According to industry experts, the exploration of the Orphan Basin could mean the beginning of a new and potentially lucrative phase of Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil industry. The basin is in an area that has not been explored before, where the weather is harsh and the water is deep. However, the potential is massive — the Orphan Basin could hold more oil than the Jeanne D'Arc Basin on the Grand Banks, which is home to the Hibernia field, the Terra Nova field, as well as the White Rose and Hebron projects. However, some caution that it's too soon to know exactly what the Orphan Basin may hold.

Mystery Surround 3 Titanic Passengers May Be Solved

Nearly a century after they perished aboard the luxury liner Titanic, three mystery passengers who were laid to rest in unmarked graves -- including a two-year-old baby boy -- may finally be identified by Canadian researchers through DNA testing. Scientists will partially exhume the remains of a woman in her 30s, a young man and a baby, whose graves in Halifax, Nova Scotia, are marked simply No. 281, No. 240, and No. 4., in a bid to match bone fragments to extended family members who instigated the project. "We're looking at this as scientists and we're really going to be looking at the quality of the bone," said Alan Ruffman, a marine geophysicist in Halifax.
