Japan's NYK Line said Thursday its NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd. (NBP), Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (OSHIMA), and Sumitomo Corporation (SUMITOMO) had signed a memorandum of understanding to study, design, and construct the world’s first Handymax bulk carrier (ammonia dual fuel type) dedicated to the transport of copper products, that will reduce CO2 emissions to zero.The MoU signing comes just a year after Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO), a Chilean state-owned company and one of the world's leading copper producers, and NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd.

On March 9, the coal carrier Kagura for the Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (EnerGia) was delivered at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. Japan's NYK is set to order two LNG-fueled large coal carriers from Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered in 2025."This ship order is a part of a bulk carrier fleet development aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the NYK Group's oceangoing businesses by 2050," NYK said.NYK says that compared to conventional heavy oil-fueled ships, the two new ships will emit zero sulfur oxides (SOx), 80% less nitrogen oxides (NOx), and 30% less carbon dioxide (CO2).

Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. A christening ceremony at Oshima Shipbuilding yard in Japan was recently held by U-Ming Marine Transport Corporation (TSEC code: 2606 – one of nine public-listed companies of the Far Eastern Group) for its new built 99,990 DWT Post Panamax Bulk Carrier M.V. Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) said that a naming ceremony was held Monday for the MOL-operated next-generation coal carrier at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan.The 234.96 meters long vessel, with a  deadweight tonnage of 89,999 tons, will serve Hokuriku Electric Power Company. Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., (“K” Line) has delivered the Tohoku Maru, a 91,000 DWT-type special coal carrier at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.Tohoku Maru is same type as “K” Line’s specialized fleet for transport of thermal coal known as the “Corona-series”. The “Corona-series” consists of epoch-making coal carriers equipped with wide beam and shallow draft, which are said to be the most suitable type to enter ports of Japanese Thermal Power Stations to discharge cargo.Tohoku Maru is equipped with Advanced Flipper Fins and Rudder Fin which promote her propeller efficiency.

The marine renewable energy technology company Eco Marine Power (EMP) announced that its Aquarius MAS + Solar solution has been installed on the large general cargo ship MV Panamana.The  Japan-based EMP said in a press release that this installation was carried out by the ship’s crew with remote support provided by Zeaborn Ship Management (Singapore) Pte. The shipping and logistics company NYK (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) has concluded a long-term contract with Mitsubishi Paper Mills Limited for a new wood-chip carrier to be built by Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Inc. has been named "Pirika Moshiri Maru." Honoring the history and culture of Hokkaido’s indigenous Ainu inhabitants, the name of the new ship is derived from the Ainu words "pirika,” meaning beautiful, and "moshiri,” meaning earth.After construction at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. A new vessel has been ordered from Japanes shipyard Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for delivey in 2021. The 98,500 dwt ship will mainly be used for transporting coal from locations outside Japan to the city of Kobe.NYK, together with Asahi Shipping Co. A new coal carrier, Shinryo Maru, was delivered at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. on March 9. The new coal carrier is the second ship to take the name Shinryo Maru. The first-generation vessel was delivered in 2003 and began transporting coal for OEPC 15 years ago. The new ship, which replaces the previous one, has been registered in Okinawa prefecture, Japan, the same as the first-generation vessel, and will transport coal mainly from Australia and Indonesia to generate electricity for OEPC. Compared to a standard 70,000-ton Panamax bulk carrier, the new Shinryo Maru has a wider beam and a shallower draft, improving transportation efficiency. Wärtsilä informs it has been contracted to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems for two new 56,000 DWT Handymax bulk carriers being built at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan for Tokyo based NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NYK BP). The newbuilds will be the first vessels owned or chartered by NYK Group having exhaust gas cleaning systems installed. By fitting the scrubber systems, the ships will be compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) SOx emissions regulations, which come into force in 2020.

Japanese shipbuilders Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. have reached a basic agreement to form an alliance in the commercial ship business. Together the two companies will seek business synergy and target sustainable growth to strengthen global competitiveness, while also respecting mutual independence, MHI said. The shipbuilders will also work toward establishing a technical alliance to focus on development of new ship designs and technologies, standardization of design and construction, as well as efficient shared use of tools and equipment. The alliance with Oshima follows on MHI’s agreement reached at the end of March with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

A new 65k open-hatch general cargo carrier design concept jointly developed by DNV GL and Oshima Shipbuilding has been launched at Nor-Shipping. Intended for a wide range of project cargoes and packaged goods, the vessel design includes composite tween decks to maximize space utilization and save weight. A new coal carrier Noshiro Maru was delivered on September 30 at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in Saikai city, Nagasaki prefecture. A delivery and naming ceremony was held at the shipyard on the same day and attended by Makoto Kaiwa, chairman of Tohoku Electric Power; his wife; and NYK Chairman Yasumi Kudo. The new ship is the third to take the name Noshiro Maru, the first of which began transporting coal for Tohoku Electric Power Co. Inc. 23 years ago. The vessel is named after Noshiro terminal in Akita prefecture, the destination for coal that is transported mainly from Australia and Indonesia to generate electricity for the Tohoku district of Japan.

According to the Nikkei, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI)  has entered negotiations with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., each first, third, and fourth, respectively, in terms of shipbuilding tonnage, to form an alliance in the area of commercial ships.
