A New Breed of Tug

When markets expand niches are created, goes the logic. For builders of tugs, that market is “floating gas” and the expanding use of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, as a fuel. In support of LNG, there’ll be more oceangoing tug duty — the new floating storage and regasification units, or FSRUs, mean busier LNG carriers, and LNG cargo owners have an interest in tug escorts that share their “carbon footprint”. Still, new emissions rules offer ways to keep using refinery products, and the work of master tug designers suggests the new breeds of tugs are about more than fuel.

Reach Subsea Enters Survey Deal for Edda Fonn

Norwegian owner of offshore inspection vessels Reach Subsea has secured a contract for its Edda Fonn vessel.   According to Reach Subsea, the contract is for an ROV/survey work covering the next 40 days for Edda Fonn. Commencement will be this week. The details in the contract are confidential.   Edda Fonn is a vessel used for IMR, survey and light construction services.  The company claims that Edda Fonn is a high quality, cost effective and flexible vessel for IMR, survey and light construction services.   The vessel has an overall length of 84.7 meters, 18 meters abeam, 700 square meters aft deck and a 7.2×7.2 meters working moonpool. Reach Subsea hired the vessel on a 3-year contract from Ostensjo Rederi in December 2014.

Remote Monitoring From Finning Provides Time Savings

Solent Towage Ltd (STL), the UK arm of Norwegian marine services company, Ostensjo Rederi AS, has saved over 60-man hours since December 2013 by installing gplink, the remote monitoring and tracking solution from Finning Power Systems (Finning) for Cat® engines. The company, which operates a fleet of seven tugboats off the UK’s south coast, two of which use Cat engines, became the first commercial Finning customer in the UK to use gplink. Some vessels in Solent Towage’s fleet are chartered for 186 days per year by the operator of a large oil refinery in the area.

Caterpillar Provides Power Solutions for Norwegian OSV

MaK Propulsion Engines, DEP solutions chosen for Ostensjo Rederi AS  newbuild. Caterpillar Marine Power Systems was recently selected to provide 2x 6 M 25 C and 2x 9 M 25 C propulsion engines for an Ostensjo Rederi AS offshore supply newbuild. Each 6 M 25 C engine will provide 2000 kW @ 750 rpm. The 9 M 25 C will each provide 3000 kW @ 750 rpm of rated power. All engines feature a new innovative air injection system, designed to ensure load response remains in a low rpm range and are packaged with the Siemens BLUEDRIVE PlusC diesel electric propulsion systems.
