Fleet Broadband – 30,000 Terminals Activated

This milestone was reached with the installation of a FleetBroadband 500(TM) on Olympic Future, a Greek-flagged crude oil tanker, by Inmarsat's distribution partner OTESAT-Maritel. Springfield Shipping, the vessel's management company, selected FleetBroadband as part of an integrated communications solution developed by OTESAT-Maritel. "This solution is an optimal match for our ICT needs, and we are pleased with the comprehensive service offering and first-class support that we have received," said a company spokesperson. Frank Coles, President of Inmarsat Maritime, said, "This is a significant achievement that yet again demonstrates the high regard and continued demand for FleetBroadband in the maritime industry.

Pirate-proof Communication System Launched by Beam

Beam’s new PotsDOCK Extreme Covert Piracy Solution utilizes the Iridium Extreme satellite handset and the Beam Covert Antenna system to provide a dedicated system for a safe room or citadel on board a vessel. The system ensures that essential communications on board the vessel, such as the ability to alert authorities in the event of a piracy attack, can be maintained even if all power or communication equipment has been cut off or destroyed by pirates. The system couples the Iridium Extreme handset and the Beam Extreme PotsDOCK to provide the captain and crew with access to voice communications, tracking and alert functionality from the system. In the event of an attack, an alert can be raised and the vessel can be tracked immediately.

Beam Announces Inmarsat-Based Piracy Solution

Beam Communications Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of World Reach Limited (ASX: WRR), announces a new satellite piracy solution for secure communication on board a vessel. The new system operates with the Inmarsat satellite network. Beam’s new Oceana 800 Covert Piracy Solution provides a dedicated system for a safe room or citadel on board a vessel. Telaurus Appoints Davison As Product Manager

Telaurus Communications, a Globecomm Maritime company, has appointed Geoff Davison as Product Manager – Value Added Services. Geoff joins Telaurus with 20 years’ experience in electronics, telecommunications and information technology in the marine, military and avionics markets. For the last 10 years Geoff has held a senior position with AND Group, leading its technical support team for the last five years. His main role will be to develop new sales worldwide through promotion of Telaurus Value Added Services both internally and externally.

Inmarsat Unveils Fleet F77 at Europort 2001

Inmarsat Ltd, the global mobile satellite communications provider unveiled the first product in its Inmarsat Fleet portfolio, Fleet F77 at Europort 2001. family of three, Fleet F77 offers a unique new Mobile ISDN and Mobile Packet Data service for the maritime community delivering voice, fax and data services at speeds of up to 64 kbit/s. maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS) safety standard. With Fleet F77, maritime users will have the flexibility to choose the most cost-efficient two-way communications service for their varying data requirements. The mobile packet data service is a unique maritime solution, charging users only for the data they send and receive, not the time they are connected.

Inmarsat, the original mobile satcom provider for the maritime industry, has been riding the crest of a wave recently, with users at an all-time high, overall 99.9 per cent satellite reliability and the launch of its Fleet F77, Mobile ISDN and Mobile Packet Data services for the maritime community. Ruth Ling reports on what's new and what lies on the horizon. Twenty years ago, a revolution hit the maritime industry. Satellite communications became available to ships at sea. Back in 1982, when Inmarsat began offering onboard satellite communications, its first and only system was Inmarsat A, which offered voice, facsimile, telex and data services. After nine years of successful service and expansion into most maritime sectors, Inmarsat began offering Inmarsat C.
