Caterpillar Scoops Platts Award

A new concept in ship propulsion developed by Caterpillar has triumphed at the 17th annual Platts Global Energy Awards in New York. Winning the Commercial Application of the Year category, the twin fin system secured the prestigious award for its innovative design and energy-saving potential across a range of ship types. The Cat Propulsion twin fin system is a new short-shaft diesel electric set-up which has already demonstrated significant fuel and emissions-saving benefits of up to 30% in installations on board two seismic survey vessels of Ulstein SX124 design. Caterpillar has now expressed confidence that the new engine solution will yield energy savings of at least [15-20%] for other vessel types.

Competition, Quality and Demand Come Together

Silver Ships

Combat, Patrol and Law Enforcement Vessels Meet Multiple Missions with varied business plans. U.S. firms building patrol, combat and law enforcement craft are weathering government budget cuts by strengthening ties with clients and public agencies. These unique boats remain in demand because of terrorism, crime, wars, piracy and fire, and most serve multiple missions. As maritime nations beef up their defense capabilities, U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and Direct Commercial Sales (DCS) programs help builders do business overseas.

NMMA Recognizes JetPac Outboard Propulsion System at IBEX

At the International BoatBuilders~ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) recognized the Diesel JetPac~ Outboard Propulsion System with the NMMA 2003 Innovation Award for engine and propulsion systems October at IBEX, held in Miami, Fla. The JetPac~ from Outboard Propulsion Systems, LLC is a revolutionary new, self-contained propulsion system designed as an alternative to prop driven outboards, inboards and I/O~s. The JetPac~ is powered by an International Engine 2.8L 150-hp turbo diesel engine. The engine is mounted directly on top of a ten-inch 316 stainless steel water jet driven by a Kevlar~ belt and is enclosed in a watertight housing that provides additional buoyancy. JetPac mounts on the transom of most boats.

People & Company: New Outboard Water Jet Engine

The JetPac by Outboard Propulsion Systems, LLC, has been successfully introduced after five years of research and marine testing. The new, patented, outboard propulsion system mates a reliable automotive engine with a high performance, large diameter, waterjet in a single, stand-alone unit. The JetPac mounts conveniently to the transom of most small craft. The self-buoyant power units are currently available with either a 150 hp turbo-diesel or 275 hp V8 gasoline engine mated to its 250-mm (10-in.) water jet. The patented design places all components of the propulsion system, other than gauges, controls and fuel, behind the boat's transom.

Diversified Interests

With a history spanning three generations and more than 80 years, Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc. is quite the familiar face in the Gulf Coast marketplace. Tracing origins back to 1919, when Theodore Jackson (T.J.) Bender, armed with knowledge from his apprenticeship at Ollinger Iron Works, formed Bender Welding and Machine Company; Bender Shipbuilding has adjusted and changed to market demand, building an assortment of vessels - ranging from barges and pushboats to towboats and shrimp vessels to OSVs and U.S. Navy Ships, and pretty much everything in between. T.J. Bender didn't survive to see the yard's transformation from machine ship to boatbuilder, as the company founder passed away in 1948.
