Skandi Emerald AHTS Set for Petrofac’s Northern Endeavour FPSO Job

Akastor's subsidiary DDW Offshore has secured a contract extension with Petrofac for its AHTS vessel that will be put on the Northern Endeavour FPSO disconnection job offshore Australia.The contract extension follows the original one-year contract Petrofac signed with DDW Offshore for the AHTS vessel Skandi Atlantic back in September 2022.Petrofac has now awarded DDW Offshore a 9-month extension of the existing contract in Australia whereby Skandi Emerald will replace Skandi Atlantic in March 2024.The contract will last until year-end 2024, DDW Offshore informed.Skandi Emerald will continue to

Rolls-Royce Power Systems Division has opened a new Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center on its mtu Aiken campus in South Carolina.First announced in 2021 and representing a low double-digit million dollar investment, the new 69,000-sq.ft. (6,400 sqm) facility is connected to the existing manufacturing operations, bringing formerly outsourced workshop and warehouse operations in-house and expands them to provide remanufacturing and overhaul of mtu Series 2000, Series 4000 and Detroit Diesel 2-Cycle engines and components, plus internal and external rework services.

Petrofac Hires AHTS to Assist with Northern Endeavour FPSO Disconnection

Akastor's subsidiary DDW Offshore has won a one-year contract with Petrofac for the AHTS vessel Skandi Atlantic. The AHTS will support the disconnection of the FPSO "Northern Endeavour" together with towing and well isolations work in the Laminaria Corallina oil fields in the West Timor Sea. Shell, Unions Reach Deal to End Strike at Prelude FLNG

Shanghai is slowly emerging from a grueling COVID lockdown that has all but immobilized the city since March. Although Shanghai’s port, which handles one-fifth of China’s shipping volumes, has been operating throughout, it has been running at severely reduced capacity. France Orders Four Logistic Support Ships

Drewry: Ocean Freight Shipping Rates Fall in Q4

Ocean freight rates for cargoes moving under contracts on major East-West routes decreased by 7% in the fourth quarter, according to the results of Drewry’s Benchmarking Club Contract Index.The cost reduction, based on contract freight rate data provided confidentially by Asian, American and European retailers and manufacturers to the Benchmarking Club, shows that shippers who negotiate well with carriers can continue to reduce their multi-million freight spend on most East-West routes, despite the increases in bunker prices during the past year. “Blockchain” and the World of Marine Insurance

If you’ve been working in the marine insurance industry lately, you will have heard about “blockchain” at some point; it is the electronic, distributed ledger, notoriously known for enabling the use of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether. But the blockchain technology’s utility goes beyond cryptocurrencies, potentially offering creative ways to solve other real-world problems. Within blockchain ledgers, the use of ‘smart’ contracts essentially converts contractual obligations into lines of computer protocols, which facilitate, verify, or enforce its performance.

OSC Launches VLCC Chartering Business

Oman Shipping Company (OSC) has officially set up a new commercial chartering desk offering its Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCCs) to major traders and charterers covering VLCC routes worldwide. OSC, one of the biggest ship owners in the MENA region, has a diversified and young fleet of 50 vessels. OSC owns 16 VLCCs within the fleet out of which OSC is now commercially managing 15 VLCCs through its subsidiary Oman Charter Company (OCC). The move follows an announcement in December 2016 which saw OSC withdrawing 15 VLCCs from the VL8 pool based in Singapore.

Cargotec Begins Interschalt Restructuring

Cargotec is to begin restructuring at maritime software provider Interschalt, following its acquisition of the company earlier this year. The re-organisation is estimated to affect Interschalt personnel in Germany, USA (Houston) and China (Shanghai). It is estimated that some Interschalt's production and design work will be discontinued or outsourced and some Interschalt locations will be closed. Cooperation negotiations have started at Interschalt and they will affect tens of employees. Interschalt employs at the moment 223 persons. Some employees will be offered a transfer to another location within Kalmar or MacGregor. The aim is to finalize negotiations by the end of 2016 and the resulting changes will be completed during 2017.

With Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Zoe’s inaugural voyage completed this summer, the largest containership ever built is now operating with high-speed Marlink Maritime VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) on board. Seaborne Trade: Checking Up On The Trends

The recent shifts in demand trends contributed to slower seaborne trade growth in 2014 (3.2%) and 2015 (2.0%). Can Shipping Help Greece Ride out the Storm?

Greece is considered to be the world’s first ship-owning country in terms of tonnage. The Greeks are known to control 17.7% of world fleet and gaining share except in crude tankers. Even recession in the dry bulk market has not had much effect on the Greek-owned fleet with the fleet size touching 5,226 vessels last year with a total DWT of 334 million. For debt-laden Greece, shipping – a key element of Greek economic activity since ancient times – is considered a knight in shining armor at this crucial juncture. Most Greek shipping companies are family owned businesses which have been in shipping for many decades, even over a hundred years.

HCI Group Takes Over 13 Feeder Containerships

The HCI Group and two other investors have taken over a total of thirteen ships from the loan portfolio of HSH Nordbank. The HCI Group structured the portfolio acquisition and is investing a substantial amount itself. The portfolio consists of thirteen feeder ships of between 800 and 1,800 TEU, with an average age of nearly ten years. Deutsche Bank AG will be refinancing part of the portfolio. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price for the vessels. In its role as general manager, the HCI Group has outsourced technical ship management to three providers within the north-German maritime cluster. Commercial ship management will be coordinated by the HCI Group and carried out by experienced partners.
