Ship-to-shore Cranes Shipped via The Northern Sea Route

HANSA HEAVY LIFT has transported the first-ever ship-to-shore (STS) cranes via the Northern Sea Route (NSR), relocating them from the port of St Petersburg to the port of Vostochny, spanning both the European and Far East regions of Russia. HHL Valparaiso is the first vessel to sail open hatch through the Northern Sea Route, which is covered by thick ice for most of the year and has a limited window of about two months open to cargo voyages. Mammoet to do Heavy Lifting for Sasol Project

Westlake, Louisiana - Mammoet, the world’s largest service provider specializing in engineered heavy lifting and transport, has been awarded an important contract by Sasol for its new ethane cracker and derivatives complex. Sasol’s new facilities, which will be built adjacent to its existing site near Westlake, Louisiana, are one of the largest projects on the Gulf Coast. The new ethane cracker will have an impressive annual production capacity of 1.5 million tons of ethylene feeding six chemical manufacturing plants. The facility is expected to be commissioned in 2018. The contract awarded to Mammoet comprises all of the heavy lift and transport engineering, receiving modules and oversized equipment from domestic and overseas yards, transporting the cargo to site and all major lift work.

‘Super-sized’ Seaway Cargoes to U.S Ports

Economic conditions and severe weather conditions have formed the perfect storm to slow some traditional trade at U.S. ports along the St. Lawrence Seaway System. The St. Lawrence Seaway reported that year-to-date total cargo shipments for the period March 22 to July 31 was 17.1 million metric tons, virtually flat over the same period in 2011. While July is usually a slow month on the System, not all the news was negative. “The Great Lakes Seaway system is an attractive market for breakbulk cargoes, and offers one of the most promising areas for growth,” said Craig H.

Farrell Lines 2 Additional U.S. Flag Vessels

Farrell Lines announced the addition of two U.S. flag roll-on, roll-off vessels into its fleet, the Alliance Beaumont and Alliance Charleston. These ships complement the Alliance St. Louis and Alliance Norfolk, which have been U.S. flag vessels since February 2008. The Farrell Lines fleet now consists of four roll-on, roll-off vessels. The Alliance Beaumont was brought under the U.S. flag on February 21 in Dubai, and this vessel will participate in the Maritime Security Program (MSP). The Alliance Charleston was reflagged on February 12 in New York. Both vessels have 710,000 sq ft of total stowage capacity, representing 7,900 car equivalent units and over 250,000 sq ft of deck space for military cargo.
