Pacifica Shipping Adds Second Ship on NZ Coastal Service

Pacifica Shipping confirms it is introducing a second vessel onto its New Zealand coastal shipping service, which is expected to be operational mid-September this year.The vessel will add 1,300TEU extra capacity every week and will complement the existing coastal service provided by Pacifica Shipping’s MV Moana Chief, a 1,700TEU ship, which has been operating since August 2019.Country Manager for Pacifica Shipping and Swire Shipping New Zealand Brodie Stevens, said the service…

Young to Head New Zealand Shipping Federation

The New Zealand Shipping Federation (NZSF) said it has appointed Annabel Young as its new executive director. It said Ms Young was a National Party list MP from 1997 to 2002 and since then she has been the chief executive at Federated Farmers, as well as the Pharmacy Guild. The new executive director wants to get the issue of coastal shipping back on politicians' radar screen. "Everyone talks about road and rail but one look at a map of New Zealand tells you coastal shipping is a really important part of the transport network," she said. The federation started in 1906 and its current members are Pacifica Shipping, Silver Fern Shipping, Strait Shipping, the Interislander, NIWA and cement companies.

Pacifica Rolls Out New Container Vessel

Pacifica Shipping, New Zealand's coastal shipping company, is launching a new container vessel from March replacing a smaller vessel whose charter has ended, reports The Stuff. The Spirit of Canterbury would provide greater capacity for customers including reefer cargo and replace the Spirit of Independence whose charter ended in December, says Steven Chapman, CEO of Pacifica. The Spirit of Canterbury will have 1100 container capacity, 57 per cent more than the vessel it replaces. It would offer a dedicated weekly service from Auckland to Lyttelton to Nelson to Tauranga and back to Auckland. The company was focused on having enough additional capacity, specifically from Nelson as part of the new export season.

China Navigation to Buy Pacifca Shipping (New Zealand)

The China Navigation Company (CNCo), the deep sea shipping arm of the multinational Swire Group, has signed a conditional sale and purchase agreement to acquire Pacifica Shipping (Pacifica) from the Skeggs Group of companies in New Zealand. CNCo has been a long term participant in the New Zealand’s maritime and transport industry. The first Swire vessel called to New Zealand 130 years ago. Today Swire explains that it has extensive interests in agencies, stevedoring, logistics and multipurpose liner shipping services. Swire Shipping, CNCo’s liner shipping arm, currently operates five independent multi-purpose liner services from New Zealand to Asia, Australia, North America and the Pacific Islands.
