The MOD has agreed to sell HMS Ocean to the Government of Brazil after 20 years of service. Sold to the Brazilian Navy for around £84M ($117m), the profit generated from the sale will be reinvested in defence at a time when the Royal Navy is being strengthened with two types of brand new frigates and two huge aircraft carriers. HMS Queen Elizabeth, which will eventually take on the role as the nation’s new flagship, recently set sail from the port of Gibraltar carrying two Chinooks and four Merlin helicopters as she readies for helicopter trials at sea.

In Brisbane, Australia, Hamburg Süd named another 1,819 TEU container vessel, the Cap Pasley. Like the Cap Palliser, which was christened in Tauranga, New Zealand three days ago, the Cap Pasley is one of a series of five identical charter vessels owned by the Claus-Peter Offen shipping company that are to be deployed in the Hamburg Süd Group's liner service between Asia and Australia/New Zealand. Sponsor of the Cap Pasley is Carol Teys, wife of Alan Teys, one of the leading Australian meat exporters. The name Cap Pasley is taken from the cape which forms the western end of the Great Australian Bight.

For the first time in its more than 135-year history, Hamburg Süd christened a container ship in Tauranga on Sunday, 3 February 2008. Tauranga is the largest port in New Zealand. The "Cap Palliser" is one of a series of five identical 1,819 TEU charter vessels owned by the Claus-Peter Offen shipping company that are to be deployed in the Hamburg Süd Group's liner service between Asia and Australia/New Zealand. Sponsor of the "Cap Palliser" was Mary Goff, wife of the New Zealand Minister of Defense, Trade, Corrections, Disarmament and Arms Control, and Associated Minister of Finance, Hon. Phil Goff. The ship is named after the southernmost point of New Zealand's North Island.

The Chilean Navy picked up French rower Jo Le Guen from a British container ship after he abandoned his bid to cross the southern Pacific Ocean because of illness, the navy said. Jaime Bravo, Naval Commander in Punta Arenas, the world's most southerly city, said the rower was under 24-hour observation in a Punta Arenas hospital. A high-speed boat collected Le Guen from the container ship Palliser Bay, which had picked him up on April 10 after being rerouted to deliver medicine to him. The ship's crew found him gravely ill and raised the alarm. Le Guen was trying to make a solo crossing from New Zealand to Cape Horn in a bid to draw attention to ocean pollution. He contracted blood poisoning after sustaining foot wounds several weeks ago.
