Dr. Ricaurte Takes Office as Panama Canal Administrator

Dr. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales was sworn-in during a ceremony held at the Panama Canal Administration Building in Panama City, becoming the fourth Panamanian Administrator of the waterway shortly before it celebrates its 20th year under Panamanian administration on December 31, 2019.Administrator Vásquez an economist with more than 30 years’ experience in the public and private sector said: "Just a few months short of the 20th anniversary of the transfer of the Canal to the Panamanian people, we face a distinctly different reality today. Trade now travels along different routes.""This new global reality, in which the Canal operates, requires us to redefine and adapt our business.

Panama Canal Modifies Reservation System

The Panama Canal will implement, from October 1, changes in the transit reservation system for the new neopanamax locks, which includes a restructuring of payment fees for the natural gas segment liquefied (LNG), in order to optimize the use of the interoceanic route.A press release from Panama Canal Administration (ACP) said that the modifications "are a positive step for the neopanamax locks", and take into account the lifting of certain rules of navigation to LNG ships, as well as the comments of customers.In order to maximize the benefits of these new navigation rules, modifications to the Transit Reservation (Booking) System for Neopanamax vessels are required.

China COSCO to be First through the Expanded Panama Canal

China COSCO Shipping has won the draw for its container vessel Andronikos to make the ceremonial first transit through the Expanded Panama Canal during the waterway’s inauguration on Sunday, June 26. The vessel, which has a maximum capacity of 9,400 TEUs, is 8.25 meters in beam and 299.98 meters in length. The draw took place this morning at the Panama Canal Administration Building, in which a Notary Public served as witness, among invited attendees. Also participating in the draw was the Norwegian/Swedish shipping line Wallenius Wilhemsen Lines (WWL) with its car carrier Thalatta.

PCA - Draw to Select First Vessel to Transit

The Panama Canal will hold a draw on Friday, April 29, to select the first vessel which will transit through the Expanded Canal when it is inaugurated on Sunday, June 26. The draw will take place at the Panama Canal Administration Building and a Notary Public to serve as witness. The Panama Canal invited its top 15 customers to participate in the draw for the inaugural transit. Of the invited customers, those interested in participating were required to indicate the Neopanamax vessel’s name, type and dimensions that it plans to deploy on the inauguration day of the Expanded Canal. The Executive Vice Presidency for Operations will verify that each vessel complies with the Panama Canal’s requirements.

ACP Reaffirms Commitment to Panama Canal Expansion

This vital trade artery has long stood as one of the world’s most recognized and respected engineering marvels and a crucial link in the global supply chain.
