Middle East Ship Repair Yards Remain Center Stage
In the 45 years since the Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) opened on reclaimed land in Bahrain, the Middle East has become one of the worldâs ship repair hotspots. A broad range of shipyards now service both regional and global markets.Regional yards have a ready market, with hundreds of offshore rigs working across the region together with the service ships that support them. Then there are thousands of tankers and gas carriers that arrive each year to load energy cargoes for far-flung destinations.
Gibdock Opens Prefabrication Facility
Gibdock has officially opened its new âPad 1â, a specialised area for land-based fabrication projects, to a busy workload. The 2,940m2 purpose-built pad offers an area of prime 12 tonnes per m2 load-bearing workspace to support the growing range of large and complex projects that are being attracted to the yard. âPad 1 is a versatile facility with many applicationsâ, says Gibdock Managing Director, Richard Beards. Gibdock provides the highest standard in shipyard services in one of the most strategic locations in Europe. Located in Gibraltar, between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and protected within a deepwater port, its capabilities include comprehensive repair, maintenance and conversion in three dry docks.
Refurbished Seajacks Vessels Leave Shipdock Amsterdam
Seajacks Leviathan and Seajacks Kraken are prepared for their coming assignments, following a series of repair and renewal jobs by Shipdock Amsterdam. The shipyard, part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, had been commissioned for the two jack-ups by Seajacks UK Ltd. The Great Yarmouth (United Kingdom) based company has assigned the shipyard various and different major and minor adjustments on the two jack-up sister vessels in between North Sea offshore windfarm and oil & gas installation contracts.
Diversified Interests
With a history spanning three generations and more than 80 years, Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc. is quite the familiar face in the Gulf Coast marketplace. Tracing origins back to 1919, when Theodore Jackson (T.J.) Bender, armed with knowledge from his apprenticeship at Ollinger Iron Works, formed Bender Welding and Machine Company; Bender Shipbuilding has adjusted and changed to market demand, building an assortment of vessels - ranging from barges and pushboats to towboats and shrimp vessels to OSVs and U.S. Navy Ships, and pretty much everything in between. T.J. Bender didn't survive to see the yard's transformation from machine ship to boatbuilder, as the company founder passed away in 1948.
