The International Maritime Organization (IMO) January 2021 deadline for ship owners and managers to incorporate cyber risk management into existing Safety Management Systems is closer than many realize, especially given the complex profile that the risk presents and the need for a well-detailed procedure to help protect marine assets and businesses. The failure to properly address cyber risks is much greater than the simple fact that a vessel could be detained by Port State Authorities if it were found to be not in compliance.

VDL AEC Maritime to Reduce Ship Emissions

Following on from the electrification of heavy duty mobility in the form of cars, buses, automated guided vehicles and tractor units, VDL Groep intends to continue help reducing the emissions from means of transport. The family-owned international industrial business headquartered in Eindhoven will now be supplying systems for ships that comply with the latest international requirements on the emission of harmful substances. For this project, VDL has entered into a joint venture with AEC Maritime, the Eindhoven-based specialist in air cleaning, that develops and markets filter systems for ships. These so-called scrubbers filter the sulphur particles and other components from the exhaust gases emitted by ship engines.

New Tool for Recovering Oil from Sunken Wrecks

A tool for removing oil trapped in submerged vessels has been developed in Norway by design specialists Miko Marine. The launch of the Moskito aims to address the pollution threat that exists with the large numbers of sunken ships around the world that still contain quantities of oil in their tanks as cargo or bunker fuel. Many of the thousands of ships sunk during World War II now have 70 years of corrosion eating at their plates and the days are drawing inexorably closer when the pollutants that they contain will escape.

The Aquarius MRE System is a wind & solar power solution for sustainable shipping, and the data logger is to be supplied by KEI System Ltd (KEI) of Osaka, Japan. The use of the KEI 3240 Data Logger will provide a ship's crew with real time information regarding how much fuel consumption is being reduced through the use of Aquarius MRE System. This and other data can also be recorded and analysed later.
