Ten Appointments to Australian Naval Shipbuilding Advisory Board

The Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, today announced the appointment of 10 Board Members to the Naval Shipbuilding Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Donald Winter. “The establishment of the Advisory Board is an important milestone in the Government’s naval shipbuilding strategy, ensuring expert, independent advice to Government on all aspects of this historical national endeavour,” Minister Pyne said. Mr Martin Bean, CBE – Vice Chancellor and President of RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia and former Vice Chancellor of The Open University in the United Kingdom. Mr Mike Burgess – After leaving the position of Chief Information Security Officer for Telstra, he is now a Strategic Cyber Security Adviser and Consultant.

Former Navsea Commander Joins G&C Board

Gibbs & Cox said that Vice Admiral Paul Sullivan, USN (Retired) has been unanimously elected to the firm's Board of Directors. The Board believes his extensive naval command, marine engineering and government services experience will prove invaluable toward Gibbs & Cox's goal of expanding its role as a maritime thought leader, meeting the increasingly complex demands in naval architecture, ship design, systems integration and program management. "Vice Admiral Sullivan's presence on our board is a continuation of our strategy to help the US Navy meet pressing defense priorities with solutions that balance capability and cost," said Gibbs & Cox CEO Rick Biben.

Gibbs & Cox Celebrate 80 Years

Gibbs & Cox, Inc. celebrate 80 years of operations this year as an independent U.S. naval architecture and marine engineering firm. “Gibbs & Cox has been there for the long haul for the U.S. Navy,” said Vice Admiral Paul Sullivan, USN (Ret.), 41st Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (COMNAVSEA). “The partnership has been particularly fruitful for surface combatants. We have worked together on World War II destroyers right up to today's LCS design. Over this 80-year period, more than 6,000 naval and commercial ships have been built to Gibbs & Cox, Inc. designs. With the commissioning of the U.S. Navy’s first Littoral Combat Ship (LCS-1) USS Freedom, nearly 80 percent of the current U.S. Navy Ship Battle Forces surface combatant fleet, and over 45 percent of the entire U.S.

NAVSEA Earns EEO Awards

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) leadership, field activities and employees won five of six of the Navy’s 2008 Nathaniel Stinson Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Awards. NAVSEA winners included: Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock Division in the Large Component category; Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Newport Division in the mid-size component category; NAVSEA Commander Vice Adm. Paul E. "NAVSEA's policy is to aggressively seek out diversity of background as we do our business. This is a business imperative," said Vice Adm. Paul Sullivan. "We need high-end knowledge workers in every facet of our business, from waterfront to laboratory to headquarters.

Mesa Verde (LPD 19) Commissioned

Subcommittee Calls Public Hearing on LCS

The Navy’s ship for future sea warfare has become so problematic a congressional subcommittee has called a public hearing to get immediate answers. The Seapower and Expeditionary Forces Subcommittee will hear from those responsible for the Littoral Combat Ship program. In recent weeks, the program to build a fast, flexible and lightly manned warship has been beset with issues. Its advertised price of $220 million per hull rose dramatically to estimates toward $400 million a piece. The Navy wants 55 of the frigate-sized, shallow draft ships, making it a cornerstone of the future fleet. It’s designed to operate close to shore with a ship’s crew of just 40 sailors and a mission crew and air detachment of 35.

New Leader for NUWC

Rear Adm. John Elnitsky assumed command Friday of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, which conducts research and development for submarines and other underwater vessels and weapons. Elnitsky, a native of Whitehall, Pa., graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1980, and obtained advanced degrees in engineering from Naval Post Graduate School. Elnitsky was to assume command of the center during an outdoor ceremony. The guest speaker was Vice Adm. Paul Sullivan, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command. The NUWC has been without a permanent commander since the departure in May of Adm. Stephen Johnson, who held the position for two years. Elnitsky had been the commanding officer of the ballistic-missile submarine Maine from 1998 to 2001.

NAVSEA Leadership Gathers in Washington

WASHINGTON - The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) held its annual Commander’s Conference Nov. 15-16 at the Washington Navy Yard. Leaders from across the entire Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) organization, including the various field activities and the five NAVSEA-affiliated Program Executive Offices - Ships, Carriers, Submarines, Integrated Warfare Systems and Littoral and Mine Warfare - gathered to discuss the organization’s direction for future. “We discussed how we will conduct the ‘business’ of NAVSEA,” said Vice Adm. Paul Sullivan, NAVSEA commander. A focal point of the two-day discussion was the evolving Naval Enterprise Construct and NAVSEA’s role in it. Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Mike Mullen, addressed the conference and explained the construct.

Sullivan Outlines Direction for NAVSEA

WASHINGTON - Vice Adm. Paul Sullivan, commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) outlined his focus areas for NAVSEA and its affiliated Program Executive Offices (PEOs Ships, Carriers, Submarines, Integrated Warfare Systems and Littoral and Mine Warfare) 15 Aug. During a meeting with flag officers and senior executives, Sullivan discussed his message that will underscore his areas of focus during his first 90 days as commander. "Everything we do should focus on putting capabilities in the hands of the war fighter," said Sullivan. Sullivan credited former-commander Vice Adm. Phillip Balisle, who retired June 6, for setting the stage for NAVSEA's future. "We have many challenges ahead," said Sullivan, "...but we are so much farther along because of Vice Adm.
