MSI Newport Appoints New Director

Effective February 15th, Captain Fred Bronaugh, USN (Ret.) will become the new director of MSI's Newport, RI Simulator / Training Complex. Captain Bronaugh replaces Captain Frank Julian, USN (Ret.) who is retiring after 14 years of service with MSI. Captain Bronaugh has a BA in Economics and a MS in Management. During his tenure in the Navy, he attended the U.S. Naval War College. He has significant at-sea experience having been Commanding Officer of three ships. He also has experience as a Prospective Commanding Officer (PCO) Instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers’ School (SWOS), Newport, RI and served on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Technical Training.

RCCL’s Explorer of the Seas Assists in Hurricane Tracking

Explorer of the Seas, which is reportedly the world's only cruise ship equipped with state-of-the-art ocean and atmospheric science laboratories, continues to make important contributions of meteorological data to assist the National Hurricane Center. The 142,000-ton Royal Caribbean International ship recently provided the NHC with valuable 15-minute updates of surface winds on Hurricane Claudette as it grew from a tropical storm. The data was mentioned by NHC as a factor in locating the center of Claudette as it interacted with the Yucatan Peninsula. In readings taken east of Cozumel early on July 11, Explorer of the Seas recorded 50-knot surface winds when reconnaissance planes were unable to get a more reliable indicator that flight-level winds of 40 knots.

Raytheon to Supply T45 with IBS, Nav Package

Raytheon Marine GmbH won the contract with Raytheon Systems Limited U.K., to supply the Navigation suite and Integrated Bridge equipment, for the first batch of the new Type 45 Anti-Air Warfare Destroyers. Raytheon, in close partnership with the U.K. PCO, will develop this opportunity to promote the Navigation and Bridge systems as a leader in state-of-the-art, fully integrated and innovative integration technology. Raytheon Marine, Kiel is responsible for the complete supply (Hard and Software) of all Navigation System equipment, and the development and subsequent supply of major components physically integrated Bridge. Raytheon Systems Ltd. maintains leading tasks in the Program, and ILS Management.
