Soncini Returns to Help Lead Maritime IT Company

Giampiero Soncini, former officer of the Italian Navy and a retired leader in the maritime IT sector, returns to the helm via his appointment as MD of Oceanly, a new company established in December by Esa Group, following its acquisition from Arribatec of a business unit, formerly of IB srl, which develops and supports "Performance", a software dedicated to the monitoring of ship performance and the control of related emissions.To fuel the growth, Oceanly will have two MDs; alongside Sonciniā€¦

Navtor to Acquire Ingenium Marine

Navtor has inked a deal to acquire Ingenium Marine, a transaction subject to execution of definitive agreements. Once completed, Ingenium will become a fully integrated Navtor company and continue to operate from Mumbai, India, and Navtor will integrate digital logbooks into its e-Navigation and performance product portfolio. Hesse Takes the Engineering Lead at FSG Shipyard

Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) has a new Head of Engineering as of March 1, 2021, when Volker Hesse takes over the job. Hesse (47) is a mechanical engineer who began his career around 20 years ago at Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. Since then, he has held various positions in project management up to and including Head of Product Management at thyssenkrupp Marine Systemsā€™ surface vessel unit. Since 2018, Hesse has been involved in the development and orientation of a consulting company as co-founder and managing partner.

Selektope Enters Antifoulings Mainstream

Terresolveā€™s EnviroLogic 3068 Wins Blohm + Voss Approval

Terresolve Technologies announced the companyā€™s readily biodegradable hydraulic fluid, EnviroLogic 3068, has passed the stringent requirements of the Blohm + Voss Industriesā€™ Stabilizer Group and won approval from the German shipping manufacturer. After significant testing, both dry and with 5% water added, Blohm + Voss reported Terresolveā€™s non-toxic high-performance product has met the requirements for its Simplex-Compact S-type, Z-type and F-type stabilizers. These three stabilizer types cover the vast majority of marine applications performing at zero, slow and high speeds. ā€œIā€™m very pleased with this result,ā€ said Mark Miller, CEO of Terresolve Technologies. Under the ā€œSimplex-Compactā€ trademark, Blohm + Voss has manufactured fin stabilizers for ships around the world since 1961.

Blue Ocean, Ip.access Provide GSM Coverage

Ip.access, developer of picocell and femtocell solutions, announced that Blue Ocean Wireless, the worldā€™s first global GSM provider for the deep sea merchant maritime sector, is using their nanoGSM system to provide mobile phone service to merchant seafarers. Blue Ocean Wirelessā€™ global service enables seafarers to use their existing mobile phones while at sea in exactly the same way that they would in port or on land. Using the cellular signal generated by the ip.access nanoGSM picocell, crew members can use their own standard GSM phones to make and receive calls and SMS messages while on board. The nanoGSM picocell is typically installed in the accommodation areas.

China's Shipbuilding Picks up Speed

China's shipbuilding sector has picked up speed, with economic performance, product quality and manufacturing capability improving rapidly. According to Asia Pulse via Yahoo!, the output value of the industry has been growing at an average annual rate of 26 percent in the 2000-2004 period. Since the 10th five-year plan period, the industry has realized 31 per cent growth in total output value and 35 per cent growth in sales revenue. At present 70 per cent of the vessels built will be exported. The industry has exported vessels to more than 110 countries, including the United states, Japan, Germany, France and Canada, with 2004 exports hitting 5.6 million deadweight tons, valued at US$3.16 billion. Of the orders in hand, 85 per cent are placed by foreign ship owners.
