Peruvian President Pedro Castillo declared an environmental emergency on Thursday as clean-up teams struggled to contain a huge oil spill at the country's biggest refinery, after rogue waves rocked a ship unloading crude there.The spill, blamed on unusual swells caused by a volcanic eruption thousands of miles away in Tonga on Sunday, has dirtied waters and beaches along Peru's Pacific coast, with dead birds and seals washing up on shore."We are at a critical moment in environmental matters," said Castillo, before signing the emergency decree on one of the beaches hit by the spill.

USA-based shipbuilder Metal Shark has announced its expansion into the country of Peru, with a new patrol boat order now in production, and a multiyear co-production agreement recently established with the state-operated Peruvian shipyard Servicios Industriales de la Marina (SIMA-PERU SA).The first round of Peruvian Navy maritime interdiction vessels are now being built by Metal Shark in the United States. On its first ocean voyage to Europe, the training ship ‘Unión’ – a large sailed vessel belonging to the Peruvian Navy – called on the port of Cádiz, as part of its second training mission and its first mission with a stop in Europe. On the request of the shipbuilder SIMA and the Peruvian Navy, the engineering and technology group SENER has developed the ship’s complete stability booklet, which required conducting advanced studies of its weights and ballast under various loads.

Naval maritime forces from 19 countries are gathering in Lima, Peru, to kick off the 58th iteration of the annual multilateral exercise UNITAS. The meeting will conclude on July 26. This year's exercise will be hosted by Peru and commanded by Peruvian navy Rear Adm. Alberto Alcala. Participating countries include the United States, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Australia, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Italy, Panama, Mexico, Spain, Canada, and the United Kingdom. While participating in UNITAS 2017, U.S. forces will be under the operational control of Commander, Task Force (CTF) 138/U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet (USNAVSO/FOURTHFLT) Rear Adm. The Peruvian Navy has recently taken delivery of a well-equipped dive support vessel (DSV) from the shipyard Servicios Industriales de la Marina S.A. (SIMA). Designed in-house by the shipyard, the new 4400 HP vessel has significant towing capabilities and can act as a salvage tug. The 32 by 12-meter vessel has a molded depth of 4.5 meters on a finely-shaped, double chined hull. A four point anchoring system as well as a launch and recovery system for deploying an open diving bell are among the effective salvage and dive-support deck equipmet.

Five people died and six have been reported missing following a collision between MSC Regulus, a box ship operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), and the Ecuadorian fishing vessel Don Gerardo II on the border between Ecuador and Peru on December 17, 2016. The victims were all crew members of the fishing vessel. According to reports the two vessels collided just after 5 a.m. Saturday approximately 216 nautical miles southwest of Puntilla de Santa Elena, Ecuador. "At the time of the collision, MSC immediately alerted the relevant authorities in both Ecuador and Peru; simultaneously, the crew members and senior command immediately initiated search and rescue procedures, with the wounded being brought on board the ship and treated," says a press statement from MSC.

Vittoria Shipyard has extended its horizons to the South American market; the Adria-based firm – an Italian builder of military, paramilitary, commercial, transport and working ships – has signed an agreement to work with SIMA Perú, a publicly-owned company that plans, builds and maintains ships, including the naval vessels belonging to the Marina de Guerra (Peruvian Navy), in close agreement with the Peruvian Ministry of Defense. The agreement is for the analysis and execution of future projects to build highly-technological naval vessels which meet the country's special geographical needs.

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, a leading global system supplier for submarines and surface vessels, has received a service order worth around €40 million from the Peruvian naval shipyard SIMA. A key component of the order is the provision of consulting during the planning and realization of extensive modernization work on four HDW 209/1200 class submarines over a period of seven years. Among other things thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will perform engineering and technical services such as cutting and welding on the submarines and will make specialists available to provide local support. Kongsberg Maritime has been chosen to deliver an integrated subsea technology systems package including two HUGIN Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) for a new Peruvian Navy Hydrographic & Oceanographic research vessel. The 97 meter BAP Carrasco’is built at Construcciones Navales P. Freire shipyard in Vigo, Spain. The advanced new research ship will have Polar capability and be classified with PC7 notation to perform research in Peruvian waters, in order to fulfill Peru’s commitment under the Antarctic Treaty.

Many marine service companies are acquiring boat-towed metal detectors and magnetometers to assist in salvage operations and geophysical surveys. These devices can locate a variety of targets including sunken vessels, ship anchors and propellers, pipelines, cables and metal debris which must be removed from an area before dredging. The two primary pieces of equipment used in these operations are a magnetometer and the pulse induction (PI) metal detector. Magnetometers are super sensitive instruments that can detect iron and steel objects at hundreds of feet away.

"La Unión" the new Peruvian Navy tall ship sail training vessel, will be constructed under the supervision of classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL). Tall ships are used in navies around the world to build seamanship, leadership and foster teamwork under challenging conditions at sea. The keel laying for the new ship took place in December 2012 at Marine Industrial Services (SIMA), the Peruvian shipyard where the new vessel will be constructed. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. said that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Peru to build ships for the country's navy as part of the South Korean company's plan to raise exports of submarines and other military vessels. "The initial pact gives us exclusive rights to build submarines and multi-role support ships if we clinch a final deal with the Peruvian government," said Daewoo Shipbuilding Chief Executive Ko Jae-ho.  The pact also includes maintenance and upgrades of submarines for the Peruvian Navy.  The MOU comes after Daewoo signed a deal last year to sell $1.1 billion worth of submarines to Indonesia. Early this year, it received a $704 million contract to build Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability, or MARS, tankers for the British Navy.

General Dynamics Canada has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to upgrade four SH-2G Super Seasprite helicopters with an integrated mission system to enhance the operational capability of the Peruvian Navy and its ability to meet the demands of modern maritime missions. The contract, facilitated by the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), the Government of Canada's international government-to-government contracting organization, includes the acquisition of five helicopters by Peru. Four are for remanufacture and upgrade by General Dynamics Canada and the fifth one will be overhauled prior to delivery directly to Peru.
