Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Toronto arrived in her home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Jan. 18, after seven months in the Mediterranean Sea region as part of Operation REASSURANCE, the Department of National Defense said. Dozens of people held yellow balloons and homemade signs, as ice-clad HMCS Toronto docked in Halifax harbor. Operation REASSURANCE is Canada’s response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and Russia’s military moves in the region. HMCS Fredericton has replaced HMCS Toronto on Operation, part of Canada’s contribution to NATO assurance measures, which promote security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe. “I would like to congratulate the crew of HMCS Toronto on their accomplishments during this past deployment,” says Justice Minister Peter MacKay.

Irving Shipbuilding announced several contract awards today for Nova Scotia and Canadian suppliers as part of part of the Halifax Shipyard Modernization Program, a two-year engineering and construction investment to prepare the company’s facilities to build Canada's future combatant ships. Site preparation and preliminary construction is well underway, with major demolition and construction to begin soon. To date a total value of $127.7 million in contracts have been awarded.

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, welcomed the signing of a preliminary contract with Irving Shipbuilding Inc. as part of the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) project being implemented under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS). This preliminary $9.3-million contract will enable Irving Shipbuilding Inc. to conduct a review of the existing AOPS design and specifications and create an execution strategy for the AOPS project. July 27 marked the opening of the Government of Canada's Shipbuilding Consultation, which seeks input from key stakeholders on comprehensive and viable options for a long-term, sustainable Canadian shipbuilding strategy. The Government is committed to building and maintaining an effective federal fleet of ships for maritime security and services. Fleet renewal plans could see the Government invest in excess of $40 billion to build more than 50 large vessels over the next 30 years.

The federal government is keeping afloat a subsidy program for buyers of Canadian-built ships, reported the CP. Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay and Industry Minister Maxime Bernier said Thursday that Ottawa will renew and add $50m over three years to the Structured Financing Facility, which reduces the interest cost of loans used to buy Canadian-built ships. Thursday's statement noted that the government is also proceeding with more than $3 billion in ship procurement, including the $2.9-billion Joint Support Ship program and $324 million for six new Coast Guard vessels.
