Gertsen & Olufsen Stepping Stone in China

The Danish maritime specialist company Gertsen & Olufsen A/S, has established an office operation in Shanghai in order to tap into the growing Chinese market for shipboard and offshore technology. Danish maritime specialist Gertsen & Olufsen A/S has established a commercial Chinese stepping stone in the form of an office operation in Pudong, Shanghai. “We experience a growing interest for our greenship technology from an increasing number of Chinese shipyards and operators,” said Thorsten Larsen-Seul, managing director at Gertsen & Olufsen A/S. The Danish company is among the world’s leading companies when it comes to biological waste water treatment and electronic vibration compensation.

Ensolve Earns Type Approval

EnSolve Biosystems announced that it has received U.S. Coast Guard and International Maritime Organization (IMO) type approval for its new PetroLiminator® 100 Oil Water Separator. The PetroLiminator 100 uses a patented biotechnology process to remove oil and other hydrocarbon wastes from ships’ bilge water, so it can be safely discharged overboard in environmentally sensitive waters. The system contains safe, non-pathogenic bacteria that actually “eat” the oil, grease, transmission fluid and other hydrocarbons in the bilge water. The U.S. Coast Guard type approval certifies that the system meets U.S. and international clean-water regulatory standards for overboard discharge.

Ensolve Biosystems' Senior Scientist Receives Top Honor

Dr. Donald W. Kelemen, senior scientist of EnSolve Biosystems, has been selected as an honoree for the 2000 American Chemical Society's Industrial Innovation Awards Program. Dr. Kelemen is a co-founder of EnSolve Biosystems and played an instrumental role in the development of the PetroLiminator, the first biomechanical oily water separator for the marine industry. The PetroLiminator is a patented system that uses a combination of mechanical separation and bioremediation to treat bilge water so that it can be safely discharged overboard in environmentally sensitive waterways. Introduced in early 2000, the PetroLiminator has been type approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, IMO and Canadian authorities to meet international clean-water standards.

EnSolve Completes First European Petroliminator Installation

EnSolve Biosystems has completed its first European trial of its IMO and USCG approved PetroLiminator® Oil Water Separator. The PetroLiminator 100 was fitted in May of this year aboard United European Car Carrier's M/V Autopremier while dry-docked in Poland. The Autopremier has been operating in Northern European waters, where the OWS has successfully discharged over 12,000 gallons (45m3) of post-treated bilgewater in the first month of operation. Manager, Jeff Argent, stated, "The PetroLiminator has been processing all of the ships' oily bilgewater with little to no maintenance, allowing the Chief Engineer to spend time on other issues. UECC is Europe's leading provider of logistics and sea transportation services for the vehicle manufacturing industry.

Ensolve to Supply PetroLiminator for Reserve Fleet

EnSolve’s PetroLiminator System Uses Patented Bioremediation Technology to Remove Emulsified Oil EnSolve Biosystems has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) to supply a PetroLiminator Oil Water Separator for treating bilge water from its fleet service craft at the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, Calif. The patented PetroLiminator system uses a three-stage process to treat the oily water. In the first stage, free-phase oil is separated and removed to a collection tank, where it can be recycled or burned. In Stage II, the oily water passes through a bioremediation chamber containing hydrocarbon-degrading microbes, which consume the emulsified oil droplets.

Ensolve Biosystems Wins Navy Contract

EnSolve Biosystems has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Navy to develop a fully automated biomechanical system for removal of oily wastes from ships’ bilge water. This contract builds on the work conducted in the Phase I research completed in February 2002. With the option, the contract value is approximately $750,000. The new biomechanical technology would replace the existing mechanical oily water separators currently used by the Navy. These mechanical systems have proven to be unreliable and require high maintenance efforts. According to Dr. Jason Caplan, president and CEO of EnSolve, the research program for the U.S. Navy will be based on technology originally developed by the company for the commercial marine market.
