New Wave Data Underpins Ship Structural Integrity

The loss of the Stellar Daisy in 2017 was a tragic reminder of the importance of wave data to ship design and operation. The vessel sank in the South Atlantic Ocean, with 22 of 24 crewmembers lost. The structural failure of the vessel was attributed to several factors including material fatigue and the forces imposed on the hull as a result of the weather conditions.Survey requirements for some vessel types have since been tightened, but even before this tragedy, work was underway to evaluate the wave data used to determine ship structural integrity requirements.

Data-Driven Voyage Optimization: The Demise of the Data Silo

METIS Cyberspace Technology analyzes the changing operating environment.

We’ve had the means for a while, now we have the incentive to crush the data siloes that are holding back voyage optimization.Like kids in the sandpit, owners and charterers are being forced to share, perhaps more than they really want to. The IMO and the EU, for starters, are setting data-driven decarbonization rules, and those in the sandpit are having to respond.Ship managers and data analysis specialists are developing technical solutions to boost transparency with the aim of facilitating shared responsibility on CO2 emissions, but it’s no easy task.

DNV GL's ECO Insight Tops 1400 Vessels

DNV GL revealed that more than 1,400 vessels have already signed up to its innovative fleet performance management solution ECO Insight. On the market for just over two years, ECO Insight has rapidly become the leading maritime performance management solution. “Two years ago, we came to Nor-Shipping to present ECO Insight for the first time – with the backing of just five customers,” says Petter Andersen, Principal Consultant at DNV GL’s Fleet Performance Business Unit. “Now we have more than 75 customers, from all around the world and covering every major ship segment, including specialized vessel types such as ro-ro, cruise and heavy lift ships,” he added.

Trim Optimization – Saving Fuel on Offshore Supply Vessels

A joint development project (JDP) between DNV GL, Statoil and Farstad Shipping has demonstrated that offshore supply vessels (OSV) can save up to 21,000 Euros on their annual fuel bill, by running the vessel at optimal trim. The project partners carried out a comparative study in the North Sea to document potential energy savings created by using DNV GL’s trim optimization tool ECO Assistant on a platform supply vessel (PSV). “Even if our modern PSVs are highly fuel efficient due to advanced hull designs as well as innovative engine- and propeller configurations, it is interesting to observe how much impact operational considerations such as trim optimization has on the energy consumption”,says Børge Nakken, Vice President – Technology & Development, Farstad Shipping Norway.

Polarcus Fleet Certified DNV Top Environmental Rating

DNV Award Polarcus Cerificate: Photo credit Polarcus

Polarcus receive the world’s first-ever DNV Level 1 Triple-E™ rating for its fleet of sesimic survey vessels. Triple-E™ is a voluntary environmental rating scheme for ships with a rating from Level 4 to Level 1, where 1 is the highest. To achieve Level 1, all levels must be complied with and there are areas of compliance within management, operation and design. The rating is based on a verification of a ship’s actual energy efficiency and environmental performance, carried out by an independent third party.
