Poland Gets Permits to Build 3 Baltic Wind Farms

Polish state-controlled power company PGE said that it had won permits to build three wind farm projects on the Baltic Sea with a combined potential capacity of 3.45 gigawatts, taking the lead in the development of Poland's offshore wind industry. Poland, which produces around 90 percent of its energy from coal, is obliged by the European Union to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix to 15.5 percent by 2020. It currently has no operational offshore wind farms. Industry experts say the Baltic Sea, with its relatively strong wind and shallow, calm water, offers plenty of potential for generation of offshore wind power. A connection must be built to Poland's grid, however, for the projects to supply power.

Foss Maritime Aids Power Plant Reactor Tow

Foss Maritime played a crucial role in the success of the towing of a defueled nuclear reactor up the Columbia River for burial of the reactor at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, near Richland, Wash. Under a contract from Portland General Electric, Foss managed and performed barging of the 1,020 ton load from PGE's decommissioned Trojan power plant, near Rainier, Ore., to the Richland barge slip at the Port of Benton. The 270-mile tow was performed by Foss tugs Lewiston and Noydena. Foss towed ZB-240, a 240 x 56 ft. ramp barge, specifically built for the reactor towing assignment by Zidell Marine Corporation. The barge was chartered by PGE from Zidell.
