Kongsberg Maritime has signed a contract to supply Integrated Monitoring and Control Systems for five new 13,000 Dwt Product/Chemical carriers being built for Greek owner IASON Hellenic Shipping Co. Ltd at the Vinashin Group owned Pha Rung Shipyard in , east of the Vietnamese capital . The Kongsberg Maritime integrated monitoring and control concept chosen by Vinashin Group against strong competition includes an integrated solution for machinery control and cargo management.

The Pha Rung Shipbuilding Industrial Company, a member of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industrial Economic Group (VINASHIN), on January 27 launched the construction of three shipbuilding and repair factories which are considered to be the biggest in Vietnam so far. These include the Yen Hung Shipbuilding Factory, the Sea Ship Repairing Factory in Yen Hung Supporting Industry Complex and the Pha Rung VINASHIN-MAN Engine Manufacturing Factory. Total cost for construction of the three factories is put at VND 4.5 trillion. According to Mr Nguyen Van Hoc, General Director of the Pha Rung Shipbuilding Industrial Company, with the construction of the Pha Rung VINASHIN-MAN Engine Manufacturing Factory, Vietnam will become the fourth country in the world to manufacture sea ship engines.

Albacore Research Ltd. (ARL) announced the signing of Vinashin Engineering and Technology Joint Stock Company (Vinashin E&T) as the dealer for its flagship ShipConstructor software product for the Vietnam market. Under this agreement, Vinashin E&T will be the sales, support and training contact for ShipConstructor in Vietnam. ShipConstructor is the easy-to-use, AutoCAD-based 3D product-modeling software for the design and fabrication of complete ships and offshore structures. “After testing ShipConstructor throughout our entire company, we were so impressed that we approached ARL about becoming a dealer,” said Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung, Director of Vinashin E&T.

Wärtsilä Corporation is gaining an increasing volume of business from Vietnam for ship propulsion systems. The latest contract to be awarded in April by Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) is for propulsion systems to be installed in five chemical tankers to be built for Iason Hellenic Shipping Co Ltd, Greece, at the Pha Rung shipyard in Haiphong. The equipment will be delivered during 2008-2010. Each vessel will be equipped by Wärtsilä with a five-bladed fixed-pitch propeller of 4.30m diameter, shafting, stern-tube including seals and bearings and an intermediate shaft bearing. A greater scope of supply will be delivered by Wärtsilä to Vinashin for eight car carriers to be built for Ray Car Carriers Ltd, Israel.

Wärtsilä has won a Vinashin Shipbuilding Industry Corporation contract to supply fixed pitch (FP) propellers for a series of five bulk carriers under construction for UK-based shipowner Graig Group. The contract signed in November, marks Wärtsilä's first FP propeller contract from a Vietnamese shipyard. Due for delivery in August 2007, the first LIPS-type propeller will be for installation to a Diamond 34K bulker under construction at Vinashin's Pha Rung shipyard. The first vessel is due for delivery to Graig in November 2007. with a length of 590 ft., a molded breadth of 98.4 ft. 34,000 tons. Italian shipowner. Wärtsilä's LIPS-type fixed pitch propeller propellers are custom designed and made for each application.

Haiphong has been long viewed as a cradle of the Vietnamese ship building industry with such well-known names as Bach Thai Buoi and Nguyen Huu Thu in the past and Bach Dang, Nam Trieu, Pha Rung and Ben Kien today. Annually, shipbuilding firms in Haiphong city accounts for about 50% of the whole sector’s capacity. The city has continued to assert itself as a centre for building new ships and repairing large tonnage ships. By 2010, Vinashin is expected to invest nearly VND 4,000 billion in shipbuilding establishments in Haiphong, raising capacity for building new ships and repairing ships with a view to earning revenue of VND 8,000 billion.

The Pha Rung Shipyard in the northern port city of Hai Phong on August 15 began work on its largest-ever cargo ship of 34,000 DWT and an oil tanker of 6,500 DWT. As part of Pha Rung's contract to build 8 cargo ships for Graig Invetments of the UK, the 34,000 DWT ship, worth 26.5 million USD, is designed utilising state-of-art technology and will meet all international conventions on maritime operation. This is the most modern and largest ship that Pha Rung, a subsidiary of the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), has ever built, a company executive said, adding that the ship is expected to be handed over to its owner in 18 months.

The Bank for Investment and Development of Viet Nam’s Hai Phong branch has signed a credit guarantee with Pha Rung Shipbuilding Co for the construction of four oil and chemical tankers on behalf of South Korea’s Fortune Marine Co. The bank will guarantee repayment of loans to build four tankers, worth $42.3m. The bank last year also signed a credit guarantee with Pha Rung for the building of an oil and chemical tanker for South Korea’s YN Shipping. The Pha Rung Shipyard, a member of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) on handed over a dry-cargo ship to Dong Do Shipping Lines Company under the Vietnam National Shipping Lines Corporation, Vinalines. The ship, named Dong Ba, is 337 ft. long and 55 ft. wide. Its key engine Hanashin has capacity of 2,647 kW, having a speed of 12.5 miles an hour. It is designed by Japan’s Kitada company and is built under advanced shipbuilding technology meeting international quality standards ISO 9001:2000 with supervision by Japan’s NK Register and Vietnam’s Register of Shipping. Right after the hand-over, Dong Ba ship has been chartered by Japan’s Tsurumaru Shipping Lines Company.

The Pha Rung Shipyard Company, under the Vietnam Ship Building Industry Corporation (Vinashin), on Oct. 9 signed a contract to build five ships for the Forturne Marine Company of the Republic of Korea (RoK), according to a report from the Vietnam News Agency. This contract is significant, as it is Vinashin's first contract to export ships to the RoK. The 110 x 8.2 m, 6,500-ton ships will each cost approximately $11 million. Work for building the first ship is scheduled to begin in late 2005, with the ship transferred to the RoK 18 months later. After successfully building the 6,300-toe ship, Cai Lan 2, the Pha Rung Shipyard Company has won two consecutive contracts to build eight ships to be exported to the United Kingdom and five others to the RoK.-Enditem.
