More Bodies Found after Thai Tourist Boat Disaster

Thai rescue workers pulled three more bodies from the Andaman Sea, officials said on Tuesday, as the grim task of identifying more than 40 dead gets underway following a boat accident off the coast of Phuket last week."Three more bodies were found. One found near Phi Phi island," Somnuek Prempramote, commander of Naval Area 3, told a news conference in the popular holiday island off Thailand's west coast.The boat, the Phoenix, went down off Phuket in high seas on Thursday with 101 people on board, including 89 tourists, all but two of them from China, during an outing to a small island. Kull Named President of Torqeedo Group

Marcia Kull has been named President of Torqeedo Group, Inc., and will direct global sales and strategy for the electric and hybrid marine propulsion systems manufacturer. Kull will oversee Torqeedo’s growth activities in the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions. The newly created position is an expansion of the current management team. She will assume her new role on May 1, 2017. Kull joins Torqeedo from Volvo Penta of the Americas, where she was most recently Vice President, Marine Sales.

Crowley Scholarships Aid Four UW Students

Crowley Maritime Corporation recently awarded Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships to four seniors studying at the University of Washington’s (UW) Michael G. Foster School of Business. The students, Joshua Banks, Kainen Bell, Maninder Grewal and Xuan Liao, were each chosen to receive a $2,500 scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year based on their demonstrated financial need, community involvement and leadership skills. Joshua Banks, a two-time Crowley scholarship recipient is currently studying finance and entrepreneurship at UW.

Two Maritime Students Earn SUNY Chancellor’s Award

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College announced Friday that two student cadets, Julia Paxton of Sebastopol, California, and Brandon Baranyar of Fairfield, Connecticut, have been selected as recipients of the 2014 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Paxton and Baranyar both are members of the College’s Regiment of Cadets, and both are scheduled to graduate from SUNY Maritime next week. In a ceremony held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center last month, SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher honored the more than 300 college students from campuses throughout the state, presenting 274 SUNY students with the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, and 68 awards from Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society.

Thai Hi-speed Ferry Sunk in Storm-Wrecked Phi Phi Harbour

Heavy seas at Phi Phi Island have sunk a large passenger ferry, beached a cargo boat and heavily damaged at least six speedboats and 20 longtail boats, inform the Phuket Gazette citing Thailand Marine Police officials. The Andaman Jet Wave ferry, moored overnight with no persons on board is registered to carry 250 passengers, but had yet to begin its daily operations of carrying tourists to and from Krabi and Phi Phi when it fell victim to the storm. Strong waves also beached a large cargo ferry, which sustained heavy damage by the pounding of the surf. Source: Phuket Gazette

Vietnam Port Development Opportunity

Construction of Van Phong International Transshipment Port has ceased, opening door to investors says economic zone official. The $3.6 billion transshipment port, fully funded by the debt-laden Vietnam National Shipping Lines , or Vinalines , was started nearly three years ago, on October 31, 2009. However, the government has ordered the investor to stop construction, after 114 piles were successfully laid in the Van Phong Bay in the coastal province of Khanh Hoa. Phi said he is not surprised by the government’s request. “It’s difficult for Vinalines to continue implementing the project, given its poor ability,” he told Tuoi Tre. Crowley Scholarships to Business Students

Crowley continues to recognize exemplary students across the U.S., with Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships. This month, Steven Hoag, a freshman, and Tirhase Haddis, a sophomore, who are both business majors at the University of Washington, were each awarded $5,000 scholarships based on their academic records and financial need. Hoag has a cumulative grade point average of 3.58 and has made the University of Washington's Deans List. He is an active member of the fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi and in his free time enjoys weightlifting, rugby, current events and history. Haddisis studying business with a concentration in marketing and human resources management.

Polemis Elected to Stevens Board of Trustees

Spyros M. Polemis, an international business leader who has spent more than 45 years in the shipping industry, has been elected to serve on the Stevens Institute of Technology Board of Trustees. Mr. Polemis was named to the board during its spring meeting, May 20-21, 2009. Polemis is a Class of 1961 graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, where he served as president of Pi Lambda Phi and belonged to the Interfraternity Council and the Yacht Club. Polemis' family has roots in shipping that date back several centuries. He is chairman and managing director of Seacrest Shipping Co.
