SUPSHIP, New Orleans Holds Change of Command Ceremony

CAPT John Robert Exell relieved CAPT David Joe Vogel at a Change of Command Ceremony for the Naval Sea Systems Command's (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair (SUPSHIP), New Orleans, Wednesday, 12 December 2001. RADM Charles Young, Vice Commander, NAVSEA, was the principal speaker. In his remarks, RADM Young reflected on CAPT Vogel’s service to NAVSEA. He applauded CAPT Vogel’s efforts, which he said had created a dynamic three-year resurgence in quality assurance by SUPSHIP personnel and forged a long sought after strategic partnership with SUPSHIP New Orleans' lead supplier—Northrop Grumman Avondale Industries.

Northrop Grumman Delivers 17th Aegis Destroyer

Northrop Grumman Corporation Monday delivered to the U.S. Navy its newest warship, Preble (DDG 88). The new vessel is the 17th Aegis guided missile destroyer built by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Pascagoula, Miss. Merchent said the Aegis program is "the backbone of our business success. "I thank Northrop Grumman Ship Systems for such a wonderful job in the construction of Preble," said Capt. Phil Johnson, USN, Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair, Pascagoula. Preble is the 38th ship in the DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class of Aegis guided missile destroyers, the Navy's most powerful destroyer fleet. Following DDG 88, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems has seven additional Aegis destroyers under contract, with six of these ships under construction.

Northrop Grumman Delivers Aegis Destroyer

Northrop Grumman Corporation has delivered its 16th Aegis guided missile destroyer, Shoup, to the U.S. Navy, this time using streamlined testing that saved fuel, time and personnel costs. Shoup is the first Aegis destroyer to have only one at-sea trial, which was followed by a second trial held pier-side, marking the first time in the history of the company's Ingalls Operations that this system has been used. Previously, each ship underwent two separate sea trial evolutions in the Gulf of Mexico. "We're delivering her right on schedule," said Dr. Philip A. Dur, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman's Ship Systems sector. He noted that the delivery of Shoup continues the company's tradition of making each ship in its class even better than the previous one.

Newest Destroyer Delivered Early

Northrop Grumman Corporation delivered its newest warship, Mustin (DDG 89) today, to the U.S. Navy. The latest ship is the 18th Aegis-guided missile destroyer built by the company's Ship Systems sector. "This occasion is particularly poignant because this great Aegis destroyer, Mustin, will enter into service at a time when her country needs her most," said Bob Merchant, DDG 51 program vice president. "These men and women have delivered incredible quality in the Aegis destroyer program for a quarter century here in Pascagoula. Representing the Navy was Capt. Phil Johnson, USN, supervisor of shipbuilding, conversion and repair, Pascagoula. "In December 2002, we took the ship out on sea trials. It was a fabulous trial," Johnson said.
