Northrop Grumman To Sponsor Naval Institute's Essay Contest

Northrop Grumman Corporation, a co-builder of the U.S. Navy's Arleigh Burke Aegis destroyers, has committed $175,000 over five years to sponsor the U.S. Naval Institute's Arleigh Burke Essay Contest. The announcement commemorates Adm. Burke's 100th birthday on October 19. The Naval Institute's most prestigious essay contest is open to all; for details, visit www.navalinstitute.org. The top three essayists receive $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, accompanied by gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively. The top-prize winner also receives a life membership in the Naval Institute. The three winning essays will be published in the May 2002 issue of Proceedings. Essays must be postmarked on or before December 1, 2001.

Navy Awards $816.6M New York (LPD 21) Contract to Northrop Grumman

U.S. Navy has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation an $816.6 million contract for construction of New York (LPD 21), the fifth ship in the 12 ship LPD 17 series of San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships. New York will be built at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems' Avondale Operations in New Orleans, with fabrication support from three other company facilities in Pascagoula and Gulfport, Miss., and Tallulah, La. The ship will be equipped to conduct amphibious warfare missions by embarking, transporting and landing elements of a landing force during an assault by helicopters, landing craft and amphibious vehicles. Mississippi Governor to Speak at Christening

First 123-ft Deepwater System Cutter Delivered

During a celebration to commemorate the delivery of the first Deepwater surface asset under the Integrated Deepwater System, the Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thomas H. Collins accepted delivery of the vessel and returned the CG Ensign to the USCG Cutter Matagorda today, Friday, March 5, 2004, at Bollinger Shipyards, in Lockport, La. The ceremony celebrated the delivery, which officially occurred on Monday, March 1, of the first newly completed 123-ft. patrol boat, USCGC Matagorda, manufactured by HBJV, a joint venture of Bollinger Shipyards LLC and VT Halter Marine, Inc of Gulfport, Miss.

Northrop Grumman Awarded $100.4 M for Advance Procurement

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded $100.4 million by the U.S. Navy for advance procurement of long-lead time materials for San Diego (LPD 22), the sixth amphibious transport dock ship in the transformational San Antonio class LPD 17 program. "We are heartened to see a commitment to the sixth ship of the San Antonio class," said Dr. Philip A. Dur, Northrop Grumman corporate vice president and president of the company's Ship Systems sector. Long-lead materials for LPD 22 consist of steel plates and shapes, pipe, cable and other major equipment. Advance procurement funding is necessary to secure all necessary ship equipment at the best possible purchase price prior to construction.

USS Pinckney Joins the Pacific Fleet

The U.S. Navy commissioned the newest ship to enter the fleet, the Aegis guided missile destroyer, USS Pinckney (DDG 91). Pinckney honors Navy Cook First Class William Pinckney (1915-1976), recipient of the Navy Cross for his courageous rescue of a fellow crewmember onboard the USS Enterprise (CV 6) during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in 1942. The commissioning took place in a ceremony at Naval Base Ventura County on Saturday. The ship is the 19th Arleigh Burke Class destroyer built by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), and the 10th ship to honor an African-American.

Offshore Patrol Craft Program Advanced

The U.S. Coast Guard and Integrated Coast Guard Systems (ICGS) announced that preliminary design and final requirements work will commence immediately on the new Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) program. This effort will lead to a new type of highly capable, cutting-edge, medium-endurance cutter. U.S. Navy Awards Northrop Grumman Contract For DDG 102

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a $369.8 million contract to build an additional DDG 51 Class Aegis guided missile destroyer for the United States Navy. The work will be performed at the company's Ingalls Operations here. The contract awarded today represents funding for the 2002 fiscal year ship, DDG 102, included in a multi-year contract awarded to Ingalls in March 1998. With today's announcement, Ingalls has been awarded contracts to build 25 Aegis destroyers, with 15 ships having been delivered. A 16th destroyer, SHOUP (DDG 86), completed her initial sea trials earlier this month and will be commissioned in the spring. Kitchen To Retire From Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Ship Systems announced that Thomas M. Kitchen will retire later this month as president of the sector's Avondale Operations. Mr. Kitchen, 54, started his career with Avondale in 1977 as assistant controller and was named president in late 1999. Dr. Philip A. U.S. Navy Awards Northrop Grumman $1.3B LHD Contract

The U.S. Navy today awarded a $1.37 billion construction contract to Northrop Grumman Corporation to construct the eighth ship of the USS Wasp (LHD 1) class of multipurpose amphibious assault ships. Construction of LHD 8 is expected to begin in May 2003 at Ingalls Operations, which is part of Northrop Grumman's Ship Systems sector. This contract includes $360 million previously awarded for advance work on the ship, including design, equipment procurement and fabricating selected ship assemblies. Ingalls has delivered seven LHDs into the fleet, the most recent being USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), which was commissioned in June 2001. "This LHD 8 contract award is great news for our company and our Ship Systems sector," said Dr. Philip A. Dur, president of Northrop Grumman Ship Systems.

Northrop Grumman Delivers Second Double-Hulled Tanker

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Ship Systems sector delivered the tanker Polar Resolution in a brief ceremony at its Avondale Operations in New Orleans, La. Polar Resolution is the second of five 140,000 deadweight (DWT) Endeavour-class double-hulled crude oil carriers Northrop Grumman Ship Systems is building for Polar Tankers, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Phillips Petroleum Company. "The delivery of this second double-hulled tanker underscores our commitment to compete in profitable commercial shipbuilding," said Dr. Philip A. The Endeavour-class tankers are the first crude oil carriers being built for the Alaskan trade in compliance with the federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990.

Navy Awards Northrop Grumman Perfect Scores on Restoration of USS Cole

Northrop Grumman Corporation announced today that the U.S. Navy has awarded Northrop Grumman Ship Systems perfect scores for the work accomplished during the final phase of restoration of the Aegis guided missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67). Northrop Grumman Ship Systems received the highest marks possible in the specified performance areas of Schedule, Technical, Management and Cost for the performance period from January through April 2002; and, based on the perfect scores, the Navy awarded Northrop Grumman $3.9 million in performance award fee funding. The USS Cole, which was redelivered ahead of schedule, sailed from Northrop Grumman Ship Systems' Ingalls facility in Pascagoula, Miss., April 19, 2002, and returned to her homeport in Norfolk, Va., April 24, 2002.

Good As Gold

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Gold Team was chosen by the U.S. Navy to complete the system design for the Navy's advanced, 21st century surface combatant, DD(X). The project replaces the $25 billion DD-21 program of land-attack destroyers that was scrapped last fall. Northrop Grumman's Ship Systems sector will lead the system design, engineering prototype development and testing of the DD(X) System under a $265 million contract awarded today by the Navy. The team includes Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN) as mission systems integrator and more than 30 of the nation's top engineering and maritime industrial companies. The initial design contract has a total value of approximately $2.9 billion over four years. "We are very pleased and proud that our DD(X) Gold Team was selected by the Navy.

Polar Discovery to be Christened at Avondale

Polar Tankers, Inc. is set to unveil its third state-of-the-art Endeavour Class double-hulled tanker, the POLAR DISCOVERY, during a christening ceremony on Saturday, April 13, at the Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Avondale shipyard in New Orleans. Phillips Petroleum Company, parent of Polar Tankers, is building five Endeavour Class tankers. The contract cost of the POLAR DISCOVERY is valued at $168 million. The Endeavour Class tankers, also known as the Millennium Class, are the first crude-oil carriers being built for the Alaska trade in compliance with the federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990. The first tanker, the POLAR ENDEAVOUR, arrived in Valdez, Alaska, on its maiden voyage in July 2001. The new POLAR DISCOVERY tanker will join the Polar Tankers fleet in 2003.

USS Cole Returns to Fleet

The Aegis guided missile destroyer USS Cole is ready to return to the U.S. Navy Fleet following a 14-month restoration project at Northrop Grumman Corporation's Ship Systems. The ship will depart Pascagoula today to return to her homeport in Norfolk, Va. "Our team of shipbuilders has worked together with the U.S. Navy Supervisor of Shipbuilding, as well as the crew of this fine warship, in an effort to bring her back to a combat-ready state and to return her to the fleet," said Dr. Philip A. Dur, Northrop Grumman corporate vice president and president of the company's Ship Systems sector. Following the terrorist attack in Aden, Yemen, Cole was transported to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems on the heavy lift ship Blue Marlin, and arrived in Pascagoula Dec. 13, 2000, after a six-week journey.
