US, Vietnam to Bolster Maritime Security

The United States and Vietnam are committed to deepening their defense relationship, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi during a news conference with Defense Minister Gen. Phung Quang Thanh. Vietnam Opposes Chinese S.China Sea Fishing Ban

Vietnam said it resolutely opposes a temporary Chinese ban on fishing in the Gulf of Tonkin, the latest in a series of sovereignty disputes in and around the South China Sea. China's ban came as the neighbours seek to patch up ties since a row in May last year when China deployed a $1-billion oil rig in waters claimed by Vietnam. That led to confrontation at sea and violent anti-Chinese protests in Vietnam. China's May 16-Aug. 1 fishing ban violated international law and Vietnam's sovereignty and jurisdictional rights, Vietnam's foreign ministry said in a statement on its website. China introduced the annual ban in 1999 "to promote the sustainable development of the fishing industry in the South China Sea and protect the fundamental interests of fishermen"…

China, Vietnam Pledge Maritime Cooperation

China and Vietnam have agreed to "address and control" maritime disputes, state media said on Friday, as differences over the potentially energy-rich South China Sea have roiled relations between the two countries and other neighbors. Ties between the Communist countries sank to a three-decade low this year after China deployed a $1 billion-oil rig to the disputed waters which straddle key shipping lanes. Vietnam claims the portion of the sea as its exclusive economic zone, and the rig's deployment sparked a wave of violent protests in Vietnam. The two countries should "properly address and control maritime differences" to create favourable conditions for bilateral cooperation…

Port of Long Beach Expands Education Plan

The Port of Long Beach announced Tuesday, May 13, the award of education scholarships totaling $43,500 to 28 local high school and college students. At the same time, the Port introduced an expanded Education Outreach Plan at the “Celebrating Education Reception” held at the Museum of Latin American Art. The Education Outreach Plan, which was approved by the Board of Harbor Commissioners on Monday, May 12, will dedicate $150,000 in seed money for three key initiatives: a new online education portal, a maritime career exploration fair in the fall and a teacher externship program in summer 2015.
