Undetected corrosion and wear led to an equipment failure on a cargo ship while offloading cargo last year in Houston, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.On July 23, 2022, the cargo ship Thorco Basilisk was offloading a wind turbine component at the Greensport Terminal on the Houston Ship Channel when the hoisting wire rope on one of the ship’s cargo cranes failed, causing the component to drop onto the vessel’s cargo hold tween deck.No injuries were reported.

Quality assurance and certification firm DNV GL granted type approval for IBM’s Maximo Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software, a tool that helps ship owners maintain their vessels in accordance with international regulations.The certification process for Maximo version 7.x was overseen by Manchester-based maritime and offshore specialist IT firm SRO Solutions, part of the Cohesive Companies."Shipowners are legally required to implement a Planned Maintenance System (PMS) to ensure their vessels are operated and maintained in accordance with class and manufacturer requirements.

Unique Group has been awarded a multi-million-dollar contract by China Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd (COOEC).The contract was signed at the 2nd CNOOC Global Procurement signing ceremony held on November 7th, as a part of CIIE 2019 in Shanghai, China.Under this contract, Unique Group will design, manufacture and deliver a classed saturation diving system to be integrated on COOEC’s vessel, including technical support during and post installation. All equipment will comply with DNV and International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) guidelines.

Saipem, a energy and infrastructure solution provider, is implementing DNV GL’s hull planned maintenance system, ShipManager Hull, based on 3D digital twins of crane and pipelaying vessels.DNV GL will supply its advanced software, ShipManager Hull, for implementation on five vessels of the Saipem fleet. It will start with Saipem 7000, one of the world's largest crane vessels with a lifting capability of 14,000 tonnes at 42 meters. Indeed, crane vessels are exposed to high stresses during lifting, demanding particular attention to structural integrity.

ABB has added ‘Fleet Intelligence’ to its ABB Ability Collaborative Operations software, providing marine customers with a single and complete overview of their ship system maintenance needs rather than being faced with piecemeal, standalone reporting solutions. Fleet Intelligence addresses a common shortcoming in ship efficiency, where data from manufacturer manuals provide the basis for the planned maintenance system, meaning that equipment is maintained to standards set by vendors rather than being based on the needs of customers.

The second half of 2016 brought shockwaves to some ship owners who were still in a state of denial about the need to install ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) onboard their vessels. The ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention and the announcement of the first U.S. Coast Guard Type Approved BWTS, saw many ship owners rushing to drydock their vessels at the beginning of the year, or deharmonize their IOPP certificates in an attempt to delay fitting a BWTS onboard their ships. Kongsberg Maritime has delivered new fleet and vessel management functionality through a recent customized software update across Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S’ fleet and shore offices. The software roll-out took place during January 2016 and included updates to vessel and shore based modules covering maintenance, spare parts, information sharing, procurement and budgeting. The updated software was developed in close co-operation with NORDEN, an independent Danish shipping company operating a large global fleet of dry cargo vessels and product tankers.

The OSM Maritime Group has chosen TM Master as the company’s preferred planned maintenance system. Tero Marine is now in the phase of implementing TM Master on 24 container vessels under the technical management of OSM. OSM has approximately 10,000 employees and 500 vessels included in its worldwide operations. The Adani Group has signed a contract for two IHC Beagle 8 trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs). These two 8,000m3 vessels belong to the standardised IHC Beagle series, designed and built by IHC using over a century of dredging experience. Fleet management solutions company BASS said it has achieved a recent deal in the Taiwanese shipping sector by securing its maiden contract in that bustling far eastern market. Under the deal with Taiwan’s Simosa Shipping, the BASSnet Maintenance module will be implemented within the company. In the early hours of 18 May 2012, while transiting the Coral Sea, ID Integrity’s main engine shut down when its fuel pump reversing mechanism came free and jammed. This caused the camshaft to bend and slip in a drive coupling which resulted in the camshaft being out of timing and therefore the engine could not be restarted. The ship drifted in a westerly direction towards the Australian coast and the Great Barrier Reef. During the afternoon of 19 May, the ship passed over Shark Reef, located about 60 miles east of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, without incident.

The Panama Maritime Authority has authorized Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to offer its extended dry docking (EDD) programme for vessels under the flag of Panama. The flag of Panama acknowledges the technological advancements to make environmentally safe in-water inspections and maintenance and reflects improvements in corrosion resistant materials, including the endurance and effectiveness of coating technology. The EDD scheme offers ship owners and ship operators the option to extend normal dry docking intervals by 2.5 years. It concentrates on newbuildings and young container vessels, general cargo and multipurpose vessels. The first five-year class renewal dry docking is replaced with in-water surveys at 2.5 years and five years, with the first dry docking taking place at 7.5 years.

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (NYSE:HII) said its AMSEC LLC subsidiary has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy for functions related to integrated logistics support for Hull, Mechanical and Electrical (HM&E) technical data development, maintenance and management services. The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, cost-plus-fixed-fee contract contains a base period with two one-year option periods which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of the contract to approximately $22m.
