Five participants will be taking part in a pilot project in Port of Rotterdam Authority  which will focus on mobile shore-based power solutions for sea-going vessels.The project was established by the municipality of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the participants in the project are: ENGIE Ventures & Integrated Solutions BV; PON Power & its subsidiaries; Aggreko Benelux; Mobiele Stroom BV and JP Energy Systems.The project will focus on various mobile shore-based power solutions for sea-going vessels, said a press note.Shore-based power has been compulsory for ships docking at Rotterdam’s more than 500 inland berths for years.

Shipowners, shipyards, manufacturers and ports have joined forces to investigate the feasibility of methanol as a sustainable alternative transport fuel in the maritime sector.Major shipowners Boskalis, The Royal Netherlands Navy, Van Oord and Wagenborg Shipping will take part in the consortium, together with shipbuilders, Damen Shipyards, Feadship, Royal IHC and major marine engine manufacturers Pon Power and Wärtsilä together with their trade association VIV.Specialized marine equipment suppliers like Marine Service Noord and maritime service providers including C-Job Naval Architects complete the maritime supply chain.Work to study the infrastructure and supply chain for methanol is also addressed by the participation of The Netherlands’ two largest ports…

Ferry operator Stena Line and Caterpillar Marine, together with Pon Power, have entered into a digital partnership where the Cat Asset Intelligence solution will provide vessel monitoring of multiple Stena new builds with planned delivery during 2019 and 2020. Caterpillar Marine has announced Cat power solutions have been selected to power four 3100 LM RoPax Ferries for Stena Line. Each ferry will be equipped with two MaK 12 M 43 C propulsion engines. “By combining a set of proven technologies Caterpillar’s solution will provide Stena Line the most fuel efficient ferries in the world and will set a new industry standard when it comes to operational performance, emissions and cost competitiveness, positioning Stena Line to support its customers in the next decades,” said Ulf Hannemann, cruise and ferry segment manager at Caterpillar Marine.

The 60-meter Royal Bahamas Defense Force Corvette HMBS Nassau (P-61) has arrived at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam in the Netherlands for an extensive refit. The 17-year old vessel will receive a comprehensive overhaul that comprises full systems and instrumentation replacement. The P-61 refit is part of the ‘Sandy Bottom Project’ contract between Damen Shipyards Group and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force that the two parties signed in 2014. With three species of migrating cod to fish and new commercial species arriving as oceans warm, Norway is a fisheries Valhalla. Yet, recent boat sales suggest the Scandinavian country’s role is changing. Vessel orders and rules in Norway are propping up yards and designers on Europe’s fringes. Medium-sized hull orders for Romanian, Russian and Turkish boat builders are new, while large vessel orders for Denmark or Spain continue apace. Unconventional Icelandic designs, too, are gaining ground here as catches and profits soar.

Caterpillar Marine informs it has begin a dual fuel engine retrofit conversion onboard the 472-foot Fure West tanker, owned by Furetank Rederi A/B. The MaK M 43 C diesel engine onboard the tanker will be retrofitted in hull to the seven-cylinder M 46 dual fuel platform, with each cylinder offering 900 kW of rated power. Additionally, Caterpillar is also supplying the complete gas system for the tanker, including bunker stations, two LNG tanks measuring 4.15 meters by 24 meters and the vaporizer.

Caterpillar Marine and Cat Dealer Pon Power announced the first Cat 3512C marine generator sets with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro fast ferries for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 28 Cat generator sets will be installed on seven aluminum-hull fast ferries, with 14x Cat 3512 generator sets and 14x Cat 9 generator sets providing prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator set will provide 1,550 eKW at 60 Hz of rated power.

The remaining six ferries are being constructed with the option to readily retrofit the engine room to include the Dynamic Gas Blending kits in the future.

Caterpillar Marine announced that Cat power and propulsion offerings have been selected to provide complete propulsion solutions for four ocean-going towing vessels designed by Ulstein Design and Solutions. Each vessel will have four 9 M 32 C propulsion engines, rated at 4,500 bkW at 600 rpm. Also onboard each vessel will be three Cat C32 auxiliary generator sets rated at 940 ekW at 1,800 rpm as well as one Cat C9 generator set to provide emergency power. All four vessels will be equipped with two AEM shaft generators rated at 3,150 ekW at 1,200 rpm.

ABB say that the first documented results from Onboard DC Grid vessel confirm considerable fuel and noise reduction through the use of its Onboard DC Grid, where engines to run at variable speeds for top fuel efficiency at each load level. ABB explain that its Onboard DC Grid represents a breakthrough for the maritime industry in optimized propulsion by distributing power through a single DC circuit providing significant power savings while also improving the safety and redundancy compared with traditional AC systems. up to 27 percent. Pon Power Scandinavia, a supplier of marine power and propulsion systems, announced that the company has been contracted by ALP Maritime Services and Ulstein Design & Solutions to provide engines and gensets to four oceangoing AHTS. Designed to tow large structures over long distances, the ALP Future Class tugs represent next-generation of AHTS, Pon Power said. The vessels, developed by Ulstein Design & Solutions in close cooperation with the owner, ALP Maritime Services, are SX157 design, with a 300-ton bollard pull, capable of operating at full loads for 45 days without refuelling. Øystein Solberg, Account Manager for Pon Power Scandinavia, said that under the terms of the contract, Pon Power Scandinavia will provide four main engines and gensets for all four vessels.

Capstone Turbine Corporation, a clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, is expanding its product offering in the marine market and has appointed six Capstone marine distributors. Capstone marine microturbines, which run on cleaner and less costly liquid natural gas (LNG) or traditional diesel, already are installed on several vessels including the Argonon. The Argonon is a Type C Tanker in the European inland waterways that has been successfully operating with two C30 LNG Capstone microturbines since 2011. "The Argonon has been efficiently running using Capstone microturbines in excess of 20,000 combined hours," said Gerard Deen, Founder of Deen Shipping.

Capstone Turbine Corporation, a clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, is expanding its product offering in the marine market and has appointed six Capstone marine distributors. In addition, the company has launched a contest that will give away up to 130 kilowatts of marine power to three existing or new ship owners. Winners will be selected from entries submitted which represent the most compelling marine projects that can be powered by clean-and-green marine microturbines. Emissions regulations from 2015 onwards are driving shipowners to a crossroads on fuel selection. Ahead of Europort 2013, Rotterdam, Dutch interests are making significant waves in tangible investments in LNG as a fuel option. While there is not consensus on the potential of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel, the concept is gaining traction rapidly as using LNG reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from ships, as well as allowing operators to meet restrictions set in Sulfur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) today, which tighten from 2015 onwards.

The European consortium for Short Sea Shipping (SSS) chooses 8 ships to provide an insight into feasibility of LNG as a bunker fuel. The selection of ships took place in close co-operation between the SSS consortium partners. Both new designs, new buildings as well as existing ships of Wagenborg Shipping, Damen Shipyards Bergum, Meyer Werft & Conoship International were selected. The sizes of these ships vary in length from about 80 meter up to 160 meter and in tonnage from about 2.500 until 15.000 dwt. Research for these ships starts with determination of the cost for implementation and use of LNG systems and then the results of this research will be compared against the use of scrubber technology and low sulphur marine diesel to curb engine exhaust gas emissions.

MaK Propulsion Engines, DEP solutions chosen for Ostensjo Rederi AS  newbuild. Caterpillar Marine Power Systems was recently selected to provide 2x 6 M 25 C and 2x 9 M 25 C propulsion engines for an Ostensjo Rederi AS offshore supply newbuild. Each 6 M 25 C engine will provide 2000 kW @ 750 rpm. The 9 M 25 C will each provide 3000 kW @ 750 rpm of rated power. All engines feature a new innovative air injection system, designed to ensure load response remains in a low rpm range and are packaged with the Siemens BLUEDRIVE PlusC diesel electric propulsion systems. Caterpillar Marine Power Systems was recently selected to provide combined propulsion systems for two Scandlines ferry newbuilds. The two ferries will each be equipped with 5x MaK 9 M 32 C engines with Cat Common Rail. Each M 32 C engine produces 4,500 kW at 600 rpm for 22,500 kW of total power per vessel. W&O Supply, a supplier of marine valves, pipe, fittings, engineered products and valve automation systems, announces a change in leadership. David Turner, currently the President and CEO of W&O Supply, has been promoted to the position of Director of Business Development for Pon Power, W&O Supply’s parent company, and Chairman of W&O Supply. In his new role, Turner will be tasked with growing the Pon division on a global basis during the next five years. Additionally, Turner will leverage marketing and growth opportunities in existing markets as well as execute against Pon Power’s global marine business growth goals. Turner’s new position requires his relocation to Holland where he will work out of the Pon Power headquarters in Almere, The Netherlands.
