CIMC Raffles Delivers New ConRo Ship to Wallenius Sol

Chinese shipyard CIMC Raffles on Friday delivered the world’s largest ice-rated multi-fuel ConRo vessel to Swedish shipowner Wallenius Sol. The first in a two-vessel series, Botnia Enabler is now sailing under the Swedish flag.The 27,000 dwt ship has a length of 242 meters, a beam of 35.2 meters and the highest Finnish-Swedish ice class to cope with the harsh winter conditions in the Gulf of Bothnia. In addition to its classic RoRo function, Botnia Enabler also has a large capacity for containers.“We’re incredibly pleased and proud to welcome Botnia Enabler to our fleet.

Antwerp Port on Track to Record Sixth Year

Belgian port Antwerp said that throughput continues to register growth in the port. After record semi-annual figures, the total throughput after nine months stands at 177,026,550 tonnes – a sharp 6% increase compared with the same period last year.With these results, the port seems to be on track for the sixth record year in a row. The recent wave of investments moreover confirms the port’s appeal and reaffirms its role as a world player.Maritime throughput continues to grow. EU Investigating Antwerp Box Port Operators

The European Commission said on Friday it had opened an in-depth investigation into alleged state aid to two container terminal operators in Europe's second busiest port, Antwerp in Belgium. The Commission said concession agreements for PSA Antwerp NV and Antwerp Gateway NV contained a requirement for the handling of a minimum tonnage. The two did not reach this between 2009 and 2012, meaning they would have to pay compensation to the publicly-owned port authority. However, the Antwerp Port Authority decided in 2013 to reduce the minimum tonnage retroactively, reducing the compensation to be paid by some 80 percent. The Commission said…

MCS Adds London Stop to Australia Express Service

The MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A Australia Express Service will begin calling at DP World London Gateway Port, the U.K.’s newest deep-sea terminal, following changes to the service. The service will now provide direct calls between DP World London Gateway Port, King Abdullah port in Saudi Arabia, Colombo in Sri Lanka and ports around the Australian coast. It will reportedly be the fastest direct service between Northern Europe and Australia in the market. The call is a new trade lane into DP World London Gateway Port, further enhancing the suite of services on offer to U.K.

Antwerp Port Showcases Barge Transport Initiatives

Each week more than 915 barges call at the port of Antwerp carrying project cargo, containers and dry and liquid bulk to and from northern France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Keeping this barge traffic flowing smoothly requires efficient collaboration between all partners in the chain. Over the past few years this collaboration has led to the development of various digital tools that all share the same goal, namely to make the port of Antwerp more accessible for barges. The Instream campaign draws all these initiatives together, making it clear at a glance how Antwerp stands out from other ports. The port of Antwerp aims to increase the share of barge transport in the modal mix from the present 36% to 42% by 2030.

Better than punctually, SAL's 'MV Grietje' delivers sphere tank from Sattahip to Antwerp ahead of schedule. MV Grietje, a type 161A vessel with a combined lifting capacity of 700 m tons, loaded the sphere tank of 340 m tons measuring 20 x 22 x 24 m in Sattahip in Thailand and as a result of good planning, it was ready for discharge three days before schedule at the destination port, Antwerp, in Belgium. A member of the “K” Line Group, SAL is one of the leading  carriers worldwide specialized in the sea transportation of heavy lift cargo.

Port of Antwerp Wins IAPH Award

At the annual meeting of the International Association of Ports & Harbours in Los Angeles, Eddy Bruyninckx, CEO of Antwerp Port Authority, was presented with the bronze Environment Award. With its presentation “Creating Space for Port Development by Proactive Nature Management” Antwerp was able to convince the jury of the important place given to proactive nature protection measures in the long-term strategy for port development. A considerable part of the Antwerp port area is subject to the EU Habitats directive and Birds directive.
