UAE Cargo Handler Tests Florida Waters

Sharjah-based ports operator Gulftainer has opened Canaveral Cargo Terminal at Port Canaveral in Florida in the US for business. Gulftainer, a subsidiary of UAE-based conglomerate Crescent Enterprises, said the opening comes one year after Canaveral Port Authority signed a 35-year agreement with GT USA, the US arm of Gulftainer, to operate and further develop the container and multipurpose cargo terminal. Port Canaveral's 60-yr-old Charter Overhauled

Port Canaveral informs that Florida Governor Rick Scott has signed into law a major overhaul of the Port’s 60-year-old charter, which resulted from a nine-month community review and input process and received bi-partisan legislative support. It is the first complete review and analysis of charter revisions in the Port’s history. “The Charter revisions set the stage for the Port’s governance for a decade until the next review is required,” said Canaveral Port Authority Commission Chairman Tom Weinberg. “The Commission-appointed Charter Review Committee hosted 18 public meetings and engaged in dialogue necessary for moving the Port forward while preserving its heritage. Port Canaveral Charter to Receive Long-due Overhaul

Florida Governor Rick Scott is expected to sign bipartisan, community-supported legislation that enacts major changes to the Port Authority Charter for the first time in Port Canaveral’s 60-year history. As a Special District created by the Florida Legislature, the Canaveral Port Authority occasionally has sought legislative approval for specific charter amendments. Port Canaveral Harbor Expansion Begins

Dispute remains over who pays for maintenance costs for federal channel. The $35 million harbor widening and deepening project at Port Canaveral to allow larger ships greater safety margins for sailing in and out of the port is scheduled to begin next month with completion in November 2014. The project to widen Port Canaveral’s 400-feet wide harbor by 100 feet and deepen the entrance by two feet to 46 feet cleared the final two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permitting hurdles last week.

New Cruise Complex at Canaveral

In an unanimous vote, Port Canaveral Commissioners have approved building a new $80-85 million cruise terminal and 1.000-vehicle parking facility that is scheduled to open in November 2014. The 185,000-square-foot terminal will be located on the south side of the harbor in the Cove restaurant and retail area. “Couple this month’s opening of the new Exploration Tower at Port Canaveral with the restaurants, retail, and entertainment currently available, then add in our plans for additional Cove expansion, and the passengers and crew who will sail from this new terminal will have destination options available for the first time within walking distance of their ship,” said Port Canaveral CEO John E. Walsh.

Canaveral Moves Forward with Welcome Center & Cove Development

In an unanimous vote during its August Board meeting, the Canaveral Port Authority approved construction of a new Welcome Center and development of an entertainment district on the south-side of Port Canaveral. The $16.6 million Canaveral Cove project is scheduled for completion in June 2013. GWWO, Inc. of Baltimore, Maryland, will design the 15,000-square foot Welcome Center. Port Canaveral $42M Financing for Facilities Expansion

The Canaveral Port Authority closed on a $42m loan from PNC Financial Services Group to accelerate the development of a new cruise terminal and cargo facilities. The 3.14 percent interest rate loan has a term of 13 years and with the Port’s existing debt, will enable Port Canaveral to be debt free in 2023.    During its December Board meeting, the Commission voted unanimously to supplement its own revenues for the $100m expansion program in order to move forward to take advantage of low construction costs.   “Because of our Commission’s action, we were able to close this loan quickly to secure very advantageous terms to support future development of the Port,” said Joe Matheny, Vice Chairman of the Canaveral Port Authority Commission.”

Port Authority Commission Delivers Security Equipment

The Port of Houston Authority (PHA) commission approved several recommendations involving contract awards, bids and proposals, professional services and general administrative and operational matters during its meeting on Monday, January 26. Chairman Jim Edmonds presided over the public meeting. The commission approved recommendations to issue purchase orders to Motorola, Inc., Dictaphone Corporation, and SBC, respectively, for radio system equipment, voice recorder equipment, and telephone lines that will be installed in the PHA's Emergency Command Center. The combined total amount of the purchase orders is not expected to exceed $385,000.

Canaveral Port Authority Commission Elects Officers

Rodney Ketcham, the owner of a Cocoa Beach commercial real estate firm, was elected chairman of the Canaveral Port Authority during the board's first meeting of 2002. Other officers elected were: Raymond Sharkey as vice chairman, a retired aerospace manager serving his second term representing District 1; Donald Molitor as secretary/treasurer, the retired telecommunications business owner represents District 3 and also is serving his second term. Other board members are: Titusville attorney Joe Matheny, a second-term representative of District 2, and Ralph Kennedy, a construction business owner and Port Commissioner since 1990. He represents District 4.

Execs: Bigger Cruise Ships May Not be Better

According to reports, shipbuilders are capable of building cruise ships even larger than Royal Caribbean International's planned 6,000-passenger Genesis vessel. But whether passengers and ports are ready for future behemoths is another question, cruise-industry officials said Wednesday. There are no basic technical constraints to further size increases, Maurizio Cergol, cruise vessel chief designer for Italy's Fincantieri shipbuilding yard, said during a panel discussion on megaships at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention, the cruise industry's annual trade show at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
